I found this (two actually) awhile back and was wondering how the marks were imparted on it. The casing is a 223 LC 99. It looks like saw teeth all around just below the shoulder and also on the neck. Lets see if the pic comes out good.

So, what do yall think?

Somebody had a 30-30 similar to this a while (or a couple of yrs ) back it seems like it was inclined to be from a pressure measuring tool of 1 sort or another. It also could be a chamber defect from a rechamber or poorly finished chamber or something stuck to the chamber.

This looks to be intentional in one way or another. It is perfect all the way around the case and the same mark on the neck lines up with the one just below the shoulder. Not sure if it is something that was done to the chamber or something that was pressed on the shell afterwards in an attempt to befuddle an unsuspecting person such as myself.

I wish I could take a better pic to show how it goes all the way around the case but my camera operating skills are not that good.

Gnaw marks from the brass rats that have been chewing on it.

Looks like someone was delinking a machine gun belt. The CMP sold some 5.56 linked SAW ammo last year.

Looks like some fool tried to fire a .223 in an Asperley Aimless spiral chamber.

Sweet! I have a casing fired from a asperly aimless with a threaded spiral chamber and pre rifling. This thing has gotta be worth some money!

Is there a nick or burr on the rim? Is the swirl mark only on the one side?

No nick or burr and the mark looks like the teeth on a saw blade. They go all the way around the case just below the shoulder and a matching one on the neck.

I'll offer 10 cents for it, if you pay shipping. JW

maybe a bit of grit or small burr scratchin' it as the bolt-head cams shut?

I'll agree with de-linking mg ammo.

I don't know about the de-linked ammo theory. When I was in the Army Reserves I was trained on the M60 (in those days the mantra was "Everyone in the Section will be able to use every weapon in the section."). Unfortunately, we were only Reserves. This meant that sometimes, we had to assemble link for the M60s, and sometimes, pull it apart for the SLRs. I remeber sometimes the links would scratch the case, but never up on the neck. Never got trained on the 5.56 belt fed gun that replaced the M60, so maybe the link for them is different.

Same basic design, just smaller. Delinking MG (or SAW) ammo typically leaves longitudinal scratches on the body of the case, but not the neck. I'm going with the pre-rifled Asperly Aimless chamber, myself. ;)

I have a dozen short magnum cases I found on the range one day that have similar markings but not on the neck. They were all identical so I assumed there was a burr in the chamber of the gun they were fired from.
