Hello folks,
I have a few old Turkish Mausers and recently made a nice short brush gun out of one of them. I found a good price on a Lyman 57 SME Receiver sight. Upon recieving it I couldn't for the life of me understand how it would mount to the left side of the 98 reciever without a modified bolt stop and ejector. Is it possible to mount it from the left or do I need to buy some sort of modified bolt stop?
Thanks for any and all help that you can provide,
Chet

The 57sme should mount on the receiver just ahead of the bolt handle.

Welcome aboard.
Reciever sights on Mausers, mount on the right side. Never seen a left mount, I don't believe. This may be why you got a good price? It is probably for a Remington, or some other lesser rifle, rather than King Mauser.

As mentioned; if it is truely a 57SME then it mounts on the right side of the reciver.

This may be one of those "dumb" questions but are you absolutely certain that what you've got is a current model Lyman 57? Back before Lyman changed to the ident system they're using now, the Mauser models were simpley "57M" or "48M" (I just finished mounting a 48M on a pre-war VZ24) but, as I recall, the "SMEs" were for Lee-Endfields...and those DID mount on the left side of the receiver.

I think SME stands for Springfield, Mauser, Enfield. Gianni
This Lyman 48 is mounted on one of my 98' Mauser sporter rifles, your Lyman 57 SME should mount in the same manner.

Actually it should be 57 SMELHR cause I used to have one on my Left Handed Remington (mounts on the right side, just like a Mauser), but I guess they didn't want people to think that they stink (get it ?, S-M-E-L-H-R). LOL
They are a good sight.

The Gianni rifle proved to be less popular and useful than the asperly aimless. Gianni
