I'm finally done with my latest rifle. I took a No.4 mk2 Enfield action I bought from Numrich a few years ago and installed a McGowen barrel on it. Its about 24" long. I turned it so its about .960 at the muzzle.

I have it in a boyds laminate stock with a millet scope mount.

I refinished the metal in hot water rust bluing and homemade hot salt blueing I just started doing. The barrel is hot salt blued the receiver is hot water rust blued.

Its chambered in 38-55 win. .375 groove diameter. I already have a mold from Accurate in .377 with 2 bullet designs, one with a big flat head and one that's more pointy.

I should be able to push it a little harder than a traditional 38-55 due to the Enfield's strength.

I have yet to fire it. I am starting out with the max loads in 38-55

Does anyone have any recommendations for powder if I want more speed?

I have a 8lb jug of wc820
I also have 8lbs of 860 has anyone tried that in a big bore.

I went with 38-55 because the rim is close to the size of the .303.
.375 win is too powerful for the No.4 action.

45-70 would have required removing metal from the receiver and a different or reworked extractor.

I don't like how high the scope sits it has medium rings on it now. Its heavy too I may cut the barrel back not sure it needs to be that long for smokeless powder to completely burn

Does it feed from the mag? Much prettier than my MLE action .38-303.

You did a remarkable job on the rifle. Your bluing came out very nice. I like it. Good caliber too I'm thinking. I don't own a 38-55 but all I hear about them is good. We would like to see how your shooting session goes.

Beautifu rifle! Great choice of caliber too. I shall be waiting in anticipation for your range reports.

Much prettier than my MLE action .38-303.You might need to sell off that 38-303 - like to me! Hey, I could swap you a mint two-groove with scope mount. Not as pretty as milsurp's rifle though. Ah well. Anyway, I like a high scope mount. Mine are are a bit higher (I think). I like a high comb to suit my fairly long neck, hence the liking of high scope mounts. I have a semi-suppressor muzzle break mounted so low recoil permits head high with scope rearward shooting. Don't try that without a suppressor-break unless you have a long eye relief scope.

In case you are wondering what to do with those 'ears' on the rear of that action, they make an excellent mounting for a carry shock cord.

It clips onto a ring on my back pack strap and can be carried hands free and even fired without unclipping although unclipping is quick and easy. (That's one very accurate rifle). I have elbow-itus and cannot carry a rifle in my hand for very long. But the benefit is so great i would choose this carry method anyway. The rifle hangs muzzle down with the the grip in ready reach of my right hand. It's great!

Very nice!  A beautiful job!  Your blueing certainly turned out very nice - you can be proud of that rifle!
