I am wanting a book on the M1 Garand.
I have no idea which one to buy, there are so many out there.
I want to field strip , clean and lube the rifle. I am wanting to expand my knowledge of this great rifle.
Any recommendations?.....dale

Dale, You Tube is your friend. There are a lot of military videos with countless tips in them.

Maj. General Julian Hatcher's "Book of the Garand" is worth having. Heavy on the history and development of the Garand.

I can't resist telling you Hatcher's account of testing the rifle - they kept adding proof powder until they got enough pressure to vaporize the brass cartridge case and blow the trigger group out of the stock - but the only real damage to the action was a crack in the left bolt lug. They then measured the bolt, reassembled the rifle with a new stock and fired it 5,000 times with service rounds - with no further setback of the bolt! It's an immensely strong old gun.

Hatcher's book is a must have.

The NRA publishes an excellent booklet that contains chapters on its history, detailed disassembly, glass bedding, accurizing, trigger work, loads, questions and answers, etc.

+1 on Hatcher's "Book of the Garand."

Another book to consider is Bruce Canfield's "The M1 Garand and the M1 Carbine."

Bruce Canfield just came out with the definitive work. His gun books are the best, IMNSHO: eminently readable, yet still chock full of historical details that from other writers would just make you zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.... ;)

$85 on Amazon [w/ free shipping, since it's over $35! :D] & worth every penny!

Hatcher's Book of the Garand is excellent too, and fortunately got reprinted a few years ago so readily available & again [my copy I got back in the '90s, and is a mid-50s vintage that cost me about 2x what I last saw a reprint for on Amazon...]

But I can't recommend Canfield's new book highly enough: it's just that comprehensive & engaging.

I picked up a paperback by Roy Baumgardner entitled " Precison Shooting With The M1 Garand". It's 142 pages of tips and info on shooting the Garand and is very interesting reading. I keep picking it up time after time and find more tidbits.

The m1 garand owners manual by Duff is a good small book and covers all the basic stuff without the fluff. Include complete disassembly and fixes plus sighting and loading.

I should have mentioned in my first post that the military's FM 23-5 (function and operation) and FM 23-9 (M1 marksmanship) for the M1 Garand would be good for the library of M1 owners or aficionados. Look for FM 23-9 dated before 1957 if possible. The newer versions cover the M14 or the M16.

+1 on the booklet and then "on Hatcher's "Book of the Garand." as Sharfschuetzer recommends. Lots of misinformation on You-tube, some good stuff too but if you don't know what your looking for to begin with.......

Lots of misinformation on You-tube, some good stuff too but if you don't know what your looking for to begin with....... Larry Gibson I think he meant the U S Army training films, not amatuer videos. The Internet Archive has a number of free e books books on the Garand.Heres one I've downloaded but not read yet.https://archive.org/details/gunmanual_Fighting_Garand_Owners_ManualTo find more including manuals just type Garand into the onsite search bar.PS I found out the hard way that if you misspell Amatuer in a search you will get page after page of links to porno films.
