Made and filled twelve boxes, 12"x9"x6" with some of my lead stash. Six Linotype, three soft lead, and three wheel-weights. Probably need another twelve boxes for the rest of it. Vacation sure is a lot of work...

How much do they weigh full? My boxes are 6.5x9.25x4.5 and are 60ish lbs when fairly full when filled with 20 5-5.5lb ingots.

My original boxes were 6.5x9.25x9 and were in the 120 lb range. Needless to say I cut some of them down and made the next 25 half size.

BTW, very nice job. I did not make lids for mine. Might have to go back and do so. Its a nice touch.

I am going to guess between 150 and 170 pounds. Each box has 125 ish ingots stacked neatly inside. I fill the ingot mold to the top so they usually weigh about 1 1/4 pounds each, some maybe a bit more. I can move it by myself if I had to but two guys can move them easily enough.

Are those 2x6 and 1\2" plywood? I like those! I need to make a few.

No dove tails on the cases? Even the ruskies use dove tails.

I only wish I had that type of talent! This will have to do!

I'm impressed. That is the kind of organization I would like to have. In my dotage, however, I may have to make mine half the size. We'll see if I can "get around tuit" after my other hundred or so jobs.

On my 4.5" and 9" tall boxes, I used 3/4 plywood for the bottom and ends with 3/8" plywood on the sides. I glued all joints with a good wood glue and used a finish nail gun. They are more than strong enough for the amount of lead I have in my boxes

Would you mind describing your design here a little bit? It looks like all of the sides are made from 2x6, but there are an extra couple of screw holes near each corner that are too far from the ends so that I can't figure out what they are attached to. Did you put reinforcing corner blocks on the insides of each corner? If you wouldn't mind showing a picture of one of the boxes insides, that would be awesome, too.

Nice work, by the way. Color me jealous.

Yes I ripped 1/2 of a 2x3 for corner braces. These boxes are not pretty (I wish I had more talent) but they are very strong. I will be making a few more and will take some in process pics...

Well I was wrong. 25 boxes so far and I am still finding lead. One more box should do it and I am done. Fact is I probably have enough lead for the long haul. I turned 43 two days ago and can't imagine I'll need to keep scrounging, but I probably won't be able to help myself.

I got lucky 4 of july we had lower trps around 75* so I had buddy come out and we cast from 8:30-1:00 and had a great day. He was down from a surgery sunday but got out of the house and got some sun while I actually did the casting of bullets. Broke in set up a new bps rcbs 38 cal rifle mold he bought and ran a 150 for him to test. Ran Lyman 335 38 cal for him a couple hundred and a couple hundred of the 400 grn nasas for myself. Was a good day and not overly uncomfortable like the 90* days are.

Did that concrete crack before or after all those boxes of lead were stacked on it? :kidding:

Very nice storage solution you have built, appreciate the in-process pictures. I'm feeling some motivation stirring thanks to your posts. I think I will look at something a little smaller in order to keep the weight down near 50#. Something I would not have worried about back when I was 43

Yes, just a plastic stencil my wife made for me.

Puts mine to shame, nice handles too.
Mine are smaller, just cut up some old pallets &
stapled together.

jrayborn,
The first thing I thought when I saw the crates was, "I'd like to see how he made them." Your lead stash is coming along great, but I think the crates stole the limelight! I even saved a pic to remind me! Great job!

Thanks .45Cole, I appreciate that. It was well worth the work. I had everything stashed in 5 gallon plastic pails. This is a much better system.

nice boxes, I think I will have to make some. I have been using plastic Milk crates and they are breaking and cracking from several moves in the last few years.

However, if you spend a summer in the South, I think you'll stop making the "dry heat" jokes...seriously.

Well, I wouldn't exactly call 107 "easy" even if it is dry. But better dry than humid.
