I just picked up a carbon steel 5 qt dutch oven today. it was only $10. would the non stick coating in the pan be a problem for smelting.

by the way, I did not buy it for smelting, I have one coming in monday for that.

If any of the non stick comes off - you will get itr out of the lead when you flux - so I wouldn't worry about it.

If it is teflon, it may give off toxic fumes, or so i have heard.

the package does not say anything about teflon but it is the most widely used. I am going to look up the compeny, I like to have a back up or something like that.

Is it a teflon type coating or a "pre-seasoned" type coating? Some of the dutch ovens comes with a vegetable oil coating baked on at the factory. Supposed to make it so the noob Y2K type yuppie doesn't have to spend his time seasoning his iron when he could be practicing small squad tactics. Rub it with your fingers. If it sort of comes off and feels greasy, maybe has a slight Crisco smell it may be pre-seasoned.

it is teflon type coating. only thing about the brand I found was where I got it, was where I got it. big lots lol. I paid $10 for it, thought it would make a good chili pot. just thinking about going back and getting another one.

A properly seasoned dutch oven doesn't need a non-stick coating like Teflon and things won't stick to it much. You all probably know that. Hope you don't get lead in your chili as that'd be more upsetting than Teflon in your alloy and a darn site harder to remove. I've picked some lead out of birds but never from my chili.

He said carbon steel dutch oven, not cast iron. Carbon steel would have Teflon or Silverstone coating. Is there a difference between them, or just two brand names for the same thing?

Does anyone know, is Silverstone the same as Teflon? Stuff seems a bit harder so I am wondering if it will burnup and come off.

been doing a little looking around

another:
http://www.orioncoat.com/silverstonecoater.htm

from what I have read from other site. Silverstone is made by dupont as well as teflon. but silverstone is harder. was scares me is the term "plastic coating".

I was reading another site at the time on it.

I think they are the same too.
