Hello Folks,

I’ve been experimenting with the RCBS 35-200-FN mold and a four inch S&W model 686 revolver. I’m getting a little more than 1000 fps using IMR4227, with mild recoil, easy extraction, and no pressure signs.

My heaviest 41 Rem Mag molds are 240 grains. I’ve been wondering what velocity I could expect if I got a mold that drops bullets of the same sectional density as the RCBS 35 caliber mold? The 41 caliber bullets would have to weigh 275 grains to achieve an SD of 0.234. I know some folks on this list shoot bullets that heavy. What velocity could I expect from four-inch 41 Rem Mag revolvers?

Take care, Tom

With the 265gr WLNGC I can get about 1300-1325 FPS with a stiff load of LilGun out of my 6" M57 over an alpha chrony.

We've taken elk & moose with a 250 gr running around 1150 fps. If it were me I wouldn't run a 265 gr GC bullet anywhere near 1325 fps in a Smith, but thats just me.

Its not a typical load, but for some reason, I've always used that one gun for chronographing all my 41 loads. I only put 10-12 of those down range in the Smith. I've got my BH and RH for routine abuse.

Good morning
I have to agree with the previous posts about not inflicking a S&W 57 with "heavy" loads. Back when stell critter shooting was the big game many model 57's were ruined with steady diets of heavy slugs at high fps to wack down the 50 pound rams. Dan Wessons can handle the beating. Rugers also. I shoot all three of those models plus a few other models in 41 mag. My DW is the only 41 I run a 265 grainer in. The Ruger BH will shoot them but it is downright uncomfortable even with Packy's attached.
The S&W's are good revolvers but not designed to be fed "Toyoto stoppers". A Ruger Redhawk would make a good double action but I would take a DW over all them any day.

Groo here
I tend to shoot standard weights in most guns after my experiences with heavy boolets [ SSK 320gr] and Ohio deer.
A 215 gr swc 41 and 245 gr swc 44 have about the same sectional density.
Keith did most shooting with such a bullet shooting through much game at range.
So I see little need for heaver except for special targets [ big bear, Africa, Trucks etc]
Such loads are made as needed, not shot at longer distances often and hard on gun and shooter [ custom max performance "Oh Sh*t " loads]
I do have a 295 gr SSK mold for 41 mags but havent hit the loto for an African trip yet.

I had the 275 gr SSk mold that came out at 290-- killed a couple of Deer with the boolit and shot a lot more in practice -- I shot them in an 8 3/8 S&W 18 gr of H110 1302 fps-- 6"DWA same load 1200 and some Blackhawks - my 4'' S&W gave 1180 or so -I talked top Mr Jones when i got it and he said one could go to 19 and pressure 39,000-- it worked just fine and shot well-- but a 255 will shoot through a 280# pig from back of the ribs and out the chest and of course 220-230 Keiths or LFN will easily sail through deer-- I quit using the mold as I felt no need of it --I will not ever hunt a Kodiak -- so on lessor game it just had no purpose for me and now that lead is more of a project to find I use what works well for the game I hunt-- I am now happy with less-- but they will work if it is what you like

I use an LBT 280 grain GC in my Dan Wesson silhouette revolver, and it is very accurate at a MV of 1200, but there is no way I would run those loads through my 6" M57. I suspect it could be slowed down, but why?

I have gotten just slightly under 1200 with a 265GC in the 3" M657. It wasn't enjoyable and I ran out of front sight. The revolver seemed to handle it fine but it was grouping quite high.

Heavies are high in the Black Hawk too. Weight lifting gloves handle the hand discomfort.

Im glad someone mentioned the sight issues.
I bought the Ranch Dog mold that I think throws 260's and had to build a new front sight for my Bisley Blackhawk..
I agree with Groo. For me it was just easier to stick with the 215 to 220 range.

I've got a RD Lee 6 cav 411-255-RF TL mold. Straight wheel weights (water quenched) boolits weigh around 270gr. Mold was made specifically for the Marlin 1894S 20". I shoot mine also thru my 4" M58 and 6.5" Blackhawk. I did load some with a 19 gr W296 when I went to Alaska with the M58. Also shoot them thru my 14" Contender. My normal load for my Smith is using either a Lee 195gr SWC or SAECO 419 (200gr TCBB) under about 8 grs Unique for about 1000fps thru the Smith. My Marlin does shoot the heavy boolit very well and uses a Williams reciever sight but considering a compact scope now.
