Before you is my solution to lapping the crown of the muzzle of my lever gun. A month ago I noticed I had two burrs interceding the edge of the crown to the bore.
after percolating on how to lap them out I arrived to this.

A 14mm, 1/4 drive socket.
One marble.
a 1/4 drive extension for a drill.
lapping compound.
I glued the marble into the socket, mounted the socket on the extension, put the whole arraignment into my battery drill. Doped the marble with the lapping compound and went to work.
By using a socket, it kept the marble concentric to the axis of the drill, which kept wobble to a minimum.
It worked perfectly.
I hope this is helpful to someone else.

thanks for the post and i bet your crown, post lapping, looks very proffesional. i put a ball bearing on the floor with 2000 grit emery paper over it. i hold it in place with my two feet., one on each side. then i hand rotate the barrel over the emery paper covered ball bearing. comes out the same as yours as the idea is the same.

Good Lord! Man, you have just ruined a $1000.00 marble; only 4 of that pattern known to exist.:kidding:

I like the lap-o-matic, I'll have to make one.
Now, I just can't shake the mental image of a man holding a ball bearing with his feet and rotating a rifle against it.

You theivin' varmint you stole my idea! Except I have been using small steel ball bearings. Either way it does indeed work like a charm!

lol, that was the best marble that meijer's had to offer. I did have to buy a whole bag to get it. So gave the rest of the set to a friend of mines kid. You would think that I had given the kid a rocket ship.

What a great idea, I'll have to do that .
My wife thinks I've lost my marbles, little does know that I've had them stashed in my garage for the last 20 yrs.

I find that a 9mm or 45 cal FMJ bullet chucked in a cordless drill, works pretty good also.

Now that is quote worthy! Nice tip about crowning by the way.

I definitely would never have thought of this combination! I have used a 223 brass case and lapping compound to do a 30 cal. crown once. The shoulder of the case did the work. 223 cases fit nicely in a 3/8's drill chuck! I'm going to try this method next time. Thanks

I'm glad this contraption will be of some help to people!
It did a nice job, and I will be testing the fruits of my labor tomorrow!

Ha ha! I am not too sure that I am in any risk of putting proper gunsmiths out of business with this do dad.
Although if Goodsteel uses this for his gun smithing business, I get 0.0007% of the total bill as my licensing fee.
