Cure for lube buildup under base of bullet when sizing

I picked up a Lyman 45 sizer that had an interesting mod to the sizing die,
someone had drilled a hole all the way through the die and cut a groove on the top of the push out rod. this lets the lube under the bullet have a way to escape, when you size the next bullet the lube buildup will just get pushed out through the die then along the groove, better have a catch box or you will have lube all over the floor.
i have not tested this out yet as i am in the process of rebuilding the sizer and the die is a .454 and i do not have any guns that use that size bullet ​

I made one that way years ago, and it sorta worked. As you said, you end up with a long ribbon of lube hanging out the bottom of the die.

I would help us if you'd use strictly correct terms. That way we know precisely what you're referring to.

To help, the body, the part that does the actual sizing is called the "H" die. What you're probably calling the 'push rod', the part that the boolit pushes down and then pushes the boolit back up in turn is called the "I" die. The part that touches the top (or meplat) of the boolit and pushes it down in the H die is called the "G" die.

I am interested in what you've discovered, so please come back with more data.

The American Rifleman back in the early 70's had an article on center drilling face of "I" pushrod..leaving small ring of steel on face to bear against bullet base. I have done this on several of mine...solvent soaked Q-tip cleans out cavity. This is best done in the lathe. The cavity serves to avoid interference with sprue cut, gives space for excess lube, and the thinner ring of steel on punch face seals bullet base better. I do have an old Ideal .257 sizer die with a small hole drilled thru "I" rod..not sure if factory or later.

I read your post with interest. I could see the sense in the reasoning.

So, tonight I tried it. I have a .311 die that I use a lot. It had a slightly recessed entrance. A gas check would sorta, kinda fit into the recess. Right up until you touched it with the boolit base then it would want to move sideways.

Chucked the I die into my little Sherline lathe and center drilled it leaving a ring of about .025.

Then I chucked up the H die and very carefully & slowly cut a little step in it's throat.

Put it all back into the LAM and the gas check sits perfectly flat & still! But that little step had a sharp edge and it was good at shaving lead from the boolit. So, back in the lathe the H die goes. I just kissed that edge with a chamfer cutter.

Now it works way better than ever.
