My .45 Colt rifle shoots best with IMR4227 under a 255gr LRNFN boolit. (Yes, it's dirty, but that doesn't seem to affect the accuracy!)
I'm using 20.0gr and shooting Lever Action Silhouette matches...went from "also shot" to match winner when I changed to 4227. BUT- the powder is getting very hard to find.

Can anyone suggest an alternate that might perform as well as IMR4227?

It has been a two-year search to find the right boolit and powder combo...so, I've tried Unique, HP38, etc. I was about to give up on the .45 Colt before I tried IMR4227, but now that I know what works the supplies are running out - any suggestions for an alternate?

I would look at 296. It's one of my favorite handgun round powders

Just picked up 8 pounds of 4227 last week online. Gone now but it's been coming up regular lately. Keep looking.

May be able to find some Alliant MP-300 it is a ball powder similar to 296 / H110. The last few times I was in the LGS they had this powder, a few slower burn rate rifle powders, and powders typically used for magnum shotshells / steel loads. I have not seen 2400 for a while.

Accurate 5744 might work for you. Itis next to 4227 on the burn rate charts. I found it easy to use in cast bullet loads in the .308 and .32 Special using loads similar to 4227 loads used in the past. With the .45 Colt, filling the case with an easy to ignite powder seems to make a difference. Some powders seem to need a lot of pressure to work well, but 4227 and 5744 both work very well at lower pressures . There are others but I have not worked with them,(4759,Vitavourhi N110)

Come to Amarillo, Bring Clays, ClayDot, Red Dot or Green Dot,
and I will trade you pound for pound for 4227.

If you have a Cabela's nearby check there. I just picked up 2# a few days ago. I wanted Lil Gun, but I'll take what I can get.

Don't know if you can get ADI powders over there but if you can then AR2205 is the same as 4227.

If it is burning dirty have you tried to increase the crimp a little or increasing the load to get a cleaner burn, it made a difference when I used 2205 in my .357.
