i searched castboolits.com and found some good scoop about ideal #311413, but want to get a bit more specific for my required needs. buckshot plain based my single cavity mold, and i'd like to use the resulting cast boolits in my .308win marlin xs7vh rifle at slow speeds of 1600fps and under. i'd like some help coming up with loads using trail boss and aa5744 powders, plus perhaps reduced loads using h4895. i really don't want to hafta resort to using pistol powders, but i do have unique, bullseye and w231 if that's all that's gonna work.

any and all assistance is much appreciated, tia! [smilie=s:

I was never able to obtain decent accuracy from the gas-checked 311413 my .308s but it shot pretty good in my Krag carbine (.30-40) and my old Savage 340 (.30-30) up to 1450- 1500 fps using either AA5744 or 2400 which should be easily achievable with your plain-based boolits. (I'm currently shooting the Lyman 31208...115 gr plain-base...at just over 1400 fps from my .32-20 Low-wall without any leading.)

That's a shame, they go well with plain based .30 cal. bullets, like fleas & a dog.

I shot the 311413 plain based bullet today.I was pleased with how the bullet shot.
I have no idea whether or not this is the best my rifle will shoot with this bullet.

I loaded up 20 rounds , all with the same powder charge, all with bullets sized .311".

I'll experiment more later to see if there is a different propellant and charge that the bulletlikes even better.

thanx all, however ... looking for Plain Base 311413 .308win load recipes - no gas checks - with either trail boss and/or aa5744.

i guess (?) the trail boss 70% case rule could apply?

One of the beauties of fast burning propellants with plain based .30 cal. bullets is their ability to shoot cleanly ( many with unbelievably clean burns ) , shoot accurately, and shoot VERY economically.

Good luck with 5744 , It has never been a very good performer for me.

AA5744 would be fine if you were shooting boolits with GCs, but at the velocity level you're going to be working, it WILL leave lots of unburned powder.

yeah, i get that with my td 45-70 loads and aa5744.

You'd need to drop these powder charges about 1/2 grain to approximate things in your 308 Win. ( Range results are shown in this link ) These test were done with a 180 gr. plain base .30 cal. bullet in the 30-06.
