I picked up a couple buckets of ingots today and at the bottom of one of them was a ingot thats got "CARBONITE" down the center and "D. Staplin" on both ends. It weighs 4lbs and hard as hell. I tried doing a web search and came up with nothing other than a couple links about other ingots with the same D. Staplin but these ingots were NICKELITE.

Anyone know anything about this CARBONITE ingot? Thought I'd try to find out something about it before I throw it in the smelting pot with the rest of the ingots.

Carbonite - copper'd lead - great stuff. Don't have a clue how the nickelite will do. Let us know.

According to the brochure provided by Akheloce Carbonite is lead based Babbitt. According to Wikipedia that means it is very high Antimony, moderate tin content. It varies on the tin but the antimony is not less than 9.5% for any standard lead Babbitt listed on Wikipedia. See the table listing standard contents Babbitt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babbitt_(metal) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babbitt_(metal) Tin based Babbitt is the type that contains copper from what I am reading.

Brochure on page 7 lists tin content of the Carbonite products, match the tin listed to the table in Wikipedia and you have a fairly good chance of identifying the standard lead Babbitt being sold under the trade name Carbonite.

Or take it to a scrap yard and ask them to gun it for you and know exactly what you have.
