Hi all

I loaded up some 358429 and shot them yesterday in my 686

In 2400 I did 12, 12.5 and 13 grain they all worked well and 13 grain was the best (25 yards from a bench)

http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a419/sam549/IMG_0766_zps1b51a25b.jpg (http://s1033.photobucket.com/user/sam549/media/IMG_0766_zps1b51a25b.jpg.html)

In the unique I did 6, 6.5 and 7 grain and that where i had the problem. At 6 grain (i had 12 rounds) I had "sticky extraction"

http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a419/sam549/IMG_0761_zps196b3228.jpg (http://s1033.photobucket.com/user/sam549/media/IMG_0761_zps196b3228.jpg.html)
I did not shoot the other rounds.

Any comments?

Thanks

I don't have a load book here but your revolver is telling that 6.0 grains is enough or maybe too much. Is it leading up bad or anything? I can't push Unique too far before I get leading. It shoots good for me but can't get near a listed max charge.

Were the bullets sized? Lubed and shot as cast? What diameter was used in loading?

I have a feeling that the bullets were large in diameter and the 2400 being slower
was better in allowing the bullet to swage down to enter the forcing cone and barrel.

p.s. what alloy were you using? Looks a bit like a quite soft bullet and the Unique might punch
up the base and also cause pressures, Just a GUESS.

The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook #4 lists that boolit, sized to .357, in a 357 magnum , with Unique :
4.1 start @ 813 fps - 16,500 C.U.P.
6.1 maximum @ 976 fps - 39,300 C.U.P.
I would think you are at the top , sticky extraction is the warning sign. Don't shoot the others, especially if the boolits are .358.
Here is where the value of starting low and working up , looking for those pesky signs, pays off. Also having the Lyman Cast Bullet Manuals help. The #3 and #4 Editions are my go-to first books.

I had a Ruger Security Six that did the same thing with Unique and the 358156 (160 gr SWC). It was happy at 6.5 grains, at 6.8 grains it started to stick, and 7.0 grains would end the session until I could find something stout to whack the ejector rod with. Stiff loads using 2400 extracted fine.

Hold on---hold on !!!!!!
The Lyman book #4 does not list UNIQUE powder for that bullet---
Correct me if I am wrong but I think you are quoting the loads given for BULLS EYE ---- NOT UNIQUE
Page 258/259

The old Lyman book #45 list that bullet at 168 grains with #2 alloy and shows Unique powder at
4 grains /739 FPS 7 grains / 1157 FPS
Something does not sound correct with the OP

Please double check and be careful when quoting loads !!!!
The only loads I see listed for Unique are for 120 grain bullets

Lyman 48 also gives those charges for BULLSEYE and no data with that boolit for Unique. I wonder why there is bullseye data for all weights but not unique
