Well this what ya get when you have to much time on your hands in the rain.
5 gallon bucket with 4 gallons of water.
Plastic paint, I used 2 colors, green and tan.
Some kind of stick.
Wire to hand your part,
and last but not least you part.

Spray the paint, into the center of the water, first one color then the 2nd color.
I went with 3 cycles of color.
So I sprayed 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 all pointed at the center of the bucket.
You end up with rings on paint, mix a bit with the stick.
Now dip you part into the water till it is all the way under.
DO NOT PULL IT OUT YET
Let the paint on the water gel, takes about a min or so, take the
stick and get the paint off the water, it will clump to the stick.
NOW lift out the part, this is what you get.

The paint I used will clean off with paint thinner.

That's cool as heck. Are there any estimations as to durability?

Video please. I don't get the part about letting the paint gel and lifting it off the water. What's left to paint the object?

Video aint gona happen, no camera to do that.
The paint goes on when you dip the part into the bucket, not when you pull it out.
The reason you leave the part under water till the paint dries a bit so it wont clump on the part.
It takes about a min for the paint to dry on the surface of the water, then you use a stick to
clear the paint off the water.

Do your own test, put some paint on the water, dip what ever, piece of 2x4,
plastic bowl, one of your best plates, just dont lift it out till you get the paint off the
surface of the water.
It aint that hard.

What kind of paint did you use? Like spray paint?

RED333

Yes, spray paint for the part you are going to dip.
I used Krylon for plastic, it did take a few days to fully dry.

Krylon plastic paints needs to cure for a week. Earlier and it can wipe off. After the week all you can do is scratch it. At that point it's part of the plastic.

This is what we found out, it took days to become non tacky.

I've seen something like this on TV.
Don't remember when or what show it was.
It was how they put a camo pattern on a plastic stock.
As best as I can remember......
The camo design was somekind of plastic like seran wrap. Really thin. Printed on a computer.
The stock was submerged in a vat of hot water, the camo was placed on the water floating above the stock.
When the stock was lifted up, the camo wraped/transfered to the stock.
Was interesting to see how it was done.

Did you use a clear coat? I think I'm going to need one, I'm using krylon flat camo paint(not for plastic) and it's easily rubbed off. What's best?

No clear coat, just paint for plastic, and an update, it is not 100% durable, it is showing signs of wear. It is a black frame
so the thing still looks good.
We are still happy with the pistol.
