So i was reloading the confetti popper for my kids (no it is a single use piece of plastic that is spring powered) and I thought what about useing rice for rat orsnake shot? I dont need rat or snake shot but I bet it would work. Thoughts or experience?

Grain is not such a good idea. You will be leaving food behind for the wake of the one you got. There is never just one.

The idea was something that would penetrate the critter but not damage a floor or someting similar

Sounds like you want to shoot in the house, (not a good idea) get a trap! If you don't have kids, use poison.

they sell a very course salt it like rock salt but is about 1/2 size of BB S its used in a table grinder. It works good to about 25ft. BUT make sure you don't load more than about 3/4in in shell and use toilet paper under it to get a crimp.
Also clean gun good. about 1/2 the powder you would use for a 1-1/8oz shell load.
