Gents, Newbie here. A buddy of mine just gave me 500 each, 117 (avg wt.) grn 311316's all GC'd and lubed up for me. I asked him to make me some plinkers for the 30-30.

That said, I have lots of reference material from these pages for starting powder loads, pistol powders, etc, but nothing on a C.O.L.

Can someone suggest a C.O.L. for the 311316 in the 30-30?

Thanks, and I am in AWE of the amount of great knowledge on this forum. I am humbled by it.

Welcome aboard.

While I haven't loaded .30-30's with that particular bullet, I have loaded it with similar plain based ones.

What I always did was to start with the bullet loaded to crimp in the crimp groove. This worked with my loads and gun, it may or may not with yours.

Welcome....I use that boolit in my bolt action 30/30, stevens 325. I seat to what the gun likes. I started at the crimp groove and went so far as to crimp into the last lube groove before the gas check. Apologies for not being more specific. For accuracy, i seat in the last groove. And yes, it is a small boolit.
Search these threads for the cat sneeze/ mouse fart loads for alot more info. Also look for Larry Gibson pistol boolit in rifle loads. Some good easy reading there.

Some day I'm going to find a container of Trail Boss and try that behind the 311316. It's my favorite .30 boolit bar none.
I've used a variety of pistol powders - no filler, and Unique and been happy with all.
Start with the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook data and work up intelligently. When accuracy falls off - back down to the next lower load.

seat it to the crimp groove and try that.

works well in mine.

You guys are great and thanks so much. I hope this doesn't sound stupid, but since every groove was full of lube, I wasn't sure if it had several lube grooves or if that top groove was indeed the crimp groove. I'm glad I asked.

You might want to check the diameter of those first. That is a 32-20 mold that should drop at .314 or so. hopefully your friend sized them down to 311 or so for your 30-30

I shoot a 30-30 win 94 lever gun. I use an NOE Saeco 315 PB mold. There are two things that will dictate seating depth-the chamber shape/length and the lever action. My boolit doesn't have a crimp groove and it is tapered to fit many chamber. I could seat it way out and not hit the rifling. With too much length, it would get stuck when feeding from the tube mag up to the top of the action of the gun. I run my ammo just a tad shorter than the max that will feed.

When boolits have a crimp groove, I try crimping to that first. It makes it easy to set it by eye, as long as a dummy round will cycle in my guns.
