View Full Version : Looking for load data, 265gr LBT in the Blackhawk 45lc

Recently picked up a 45lc Blackhawk, and got some 265gr LBT cast boolits for it, but have not found a data source for that boolit. I email Cast Performance and have not heard a word back from them.

Hoping some one here has data for Ruger only loads for that boolit. I have IMR 4227, Unique, and h110 on hand...

TIA,

Zeebob

How long is the nose? I have found that nose length and it's relation to case capacity and load density have very large impacts on pressure and velocity. Max loads can vary by a full grain based on load density.

C L....the boolit length is .675", the nose is .33"

For Ruger "Only" or Freedom, TC 45 Colt firearms:

I would use 4227 unless you need to go nuclear then H110. H110 really shines with heavier boolits, the 300+ grain. 20 grains or so of 4227 will give you nearly 1,100 fps but you have a lot of latitude and could easily go up from there to 23-24 grains. I would look for velocities should you have a chronograph as every revolver is different. On the safe side of things I wouldn't push over 1300 fps with this powder and you will likely find better accuracy with less velocity anyway.

RobS...thanks for that. I am slowly working my way up to 'nuclear' as you say. I am not sure that I will need much over 1100fps with the 265's but if I could get up to 1250 of so that would be great!... I do have a chrony so I will work up starting at 20gr with the IMR4227...

I have some of the LBT 300gr boolits too...and have tried them using IMR4227 with a starting load of 19.3. (Sierra 300gr bullet data). Very shootable, but I have not run them across the chrony yet...I plan to work them up a bit with that powder as well, before moving to H110...

Appreciate the help!

Barrel length will determine best powder. I wouldnt use 4227 or R7 under a 5" stick with LilGun or H110. If your using a 7"+ 4227 or R7 have been the best for me. You can get over 1400 from a LFN 265g design....but will enjoy a 1100fps load much more.

Go to the Wheelgun and Handcannon section here for TONS of 45LC hot loads.

What do you plan on shooting with these loads?

C.L. I may end up using the 265 or 300gr bullet for a bear deterrent load for my elk hunt next fall, depending on what my recoil tolerance is... May also use the 265gr for deer here at home...

NVScouter...I will check out the Wheelgun forum... I do have quite a few manuals with Ruger only loads, my problem was really where to start with that 265gr bullet...

The 265 at 1200, maybe 1300 tops, ought to devastate a deer. Or bear.

The 265 in a 45 colt at 1000 fps will devastate a deer and any "normal" bear....
