OOps. Bob you are right. That really cuts into the value but it is likely still a good shooter.

and ideal of its value?

Doesn't anyone do their own research anymore?

Assessing true values on firearms requires quite a bit of leg work, consultation and study of referenced materials.
Asking for a "gimme" on the internet, is an exercise in futility.

Please, before judging this, shoot it. Some of these show remarkable accuracy. If you decide to restore it, CMP has some replacement barrels.

The CMP Custom Shop will also work on most of the older military rifles. I have a 1917 I may have them replace the barrel on and parkerize it.

Parkerized Krags are odd looking, but just think, in another 118yrs, it'll look just the same for your descendants. If your rifle were mine, it'd get a CMP barrel, and I'd make what little bit of wood is need to finish it back to full length. Oops, sorry, Leadman didn't mean you should have yours parked.

I was stumped because of the short barrel. Didn't know it had been cut off, thought that was the way it came and couldn't find it in any book.

Sorry if I hijack this thread, but in need to learn how to get the bolt out of a Krag.
I'm working on a Krag for a gentleman and I need to get the bolt out so I can get the junk scrubbed out of the bore. Belongs to a 70 year old Air Force vet who asked me to fix a broken peep sight (Redfield) and I decided to clean it up while I'm at it.
Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks !

Not difficult. Run the bolt back until it's just short of hitting the stop. Use your left index finger to pry up the extractor while rotating the handle up and to the left to bring the bolt lug in line with the slot in the receiver bridge. Pull the whole works straight back then. Kind of a bit tricky until you get the hang of it, but then you'll be able to do it in your sleep.

I would, definitely, ask his permission, before going any further. Some owner are sensitive about this. "ME" espcially. If you don't know how to remove bolt, you shouldn't be working on this. Firearms are too expensive today even when their non replaceable.

S.B. has a point on permission. On the other hand, as Gnohhh points out, Krag bolts are easy to remove. If it's dirty or has an accumulation of dried grease or oil on it, you may need some assistance in pulling up the extractor. I use the rim of a 30/40 case, but any brass rim will do if large enough. Don't use anything made of steel as that can scratch the metal parts of the rifle.

Good on you for helping the old gentleman out.

Regarding the original post, that front sight looks like a 1903 Springfield sight. Can the OP post a photo from the top down or at an angle to show it better? The sling is a US Military M1 sling (The OD color makes it post WWII and it's also on backwards) which replaced the 1907 leather sling and the canvas Kerr slings on rack grade rifles.

OP, About 1903 Springfield Armory recalled a bunch of 1898 Krags and shortened the barrels and stocks then resent them out for sale on the open market. May be prudent to have your barrel shortened to carbine length and the stock done as they did? I own one of these(not documented) and it makes a dandy hunting rifle(short, light, compact) for white tails.! Mine has the 1903 front sight on it, also.

The gentleman I'm doing this work for said for me to feel free to clean his old rifle up.
He's in his 70's and isn't physically able to do detailed cleaning anymore.
I got lucky and Numrich had the parts needed to get his old peep fixed. :bigsmyl2:
The rifle got knocked over by his son and the windage turrent snapped off, destroying the related parts.
Getting the busted screws out took some time, but with a little patience, I got them out.
I was 16 yrs old the last time I stripped down a Krag so the refresher is much appreciated !
Thanks for the help !

'03 front sights were, literally, a dime- a- dozen back in the day. It was the go-to sight it seemed for every gunsmith to install on a shortened Krag barrel.
