I built a 30-06 on a 98 Mauser action for a cast boolit shooter. It shoots really good at 100 yards with a Lee 170 gr fn and 13.5 grs of Red Dot. Less than an inch at 100 for 5 shot groups. A friend talked me into loading up some J words and I tried them. I can't keep them on the paper at 100 yards. I think I spoiled the rifle with the cast loads.[smilie=1: It still shoot cast but I ask forgiveness for my moment of weakness in trying the J words. Please forgive me for I have sinned.

Aspangler,
.
If you've achieved 1" groups at 100yds, sounds like the Holy Grail to me. Strive for a 200 yd cast load, or even paper patching, but why 'J's?
.
What's the twist on that 30'06 98 Mauser? What is your dreaded 'J'-word formula?
.
Everybody sins. We live in a fallen world.

Get yourself an "old beater bubba'd truck gun" to shoot 'J's in, if you really feel the need.
.
Stop hanging around those bad influences. Your "30'06 98 Mauser" will thank you.

Yes, I've had so-called friends tell me to try 'J's. You need to be strong.

You mean: "Ex-friend".
Friends don't let friends shoot J-words. ;)

I am ashamed of my weakness. Fortunately the rifle has forgiven me and still shoot less than an inch at 100 with cast.

If the rifle has forgiven you who are we to judge?

See! Those new fangled bullets can spoil your rifle. Good thing you stopped firing them before they ate the rifling away.

Your pennants will be to have a beer for me.:drinks: You are forgiven. Go forth and shoot some more!

I still want to know why the 30-06 seems to be such a good cast boolit shooter. Is it the large case that absorbs the pressure giving a gentle launch and low peak pressure curve? Or is is the ideal throat design maybe?

Try all of the above. That is just one excellent design of a cartridge, at a time when many very good cartridges were being designed across the world.

Don't worry we all have moments of weakness! I was at an auction the other nite and bid on a flat full of boxes of J Words my better half pinched me in the arm and I came to my senses and t my bidder card away! My excuse for bidding was that there was a box of box of .308 cast boolits in the flat. Lol

I hate the fact that my 'rust textured' bore two-grove only likes j-words but it is so accurate with them, what can I do? My mint bore five-groove, No4 barrelled 1902 MLE is what needs a good and powerful cast (or paper patched) load. Trouble is, I haven't loaded or fired a shot since D-Day. I have been eyeing my five-groove No4 for a while but it has a rough bore so would likely only work with - no not j-words - paper patched boolits.
