Just got won this on gun broker. It was pricey for a handi rifle but they don't make the 45 Colt any more and I WANTED ONE. And it came with extras. A bag of brass and lots of extra sights.

I'm thinking of looking for some 454 brass as these seem to have a reputation for long chambers. Might be easier to each the lands if my brass is out as far as it can go.

I'm going to start off feeding it a 250g RCBS because that's all I have that's suitable right now but I'm thinking something with a monster meplat or maybe even a really long wadcutter in it's future.

I passed one of those up about 2 years ago and have regretted it ever since. Nice find Dean!

Looks like some people get to have all the fun.

Great buy !

Show us some tight groups soon.

I hope to.

Hey, now I've got y'all's attention, which one of them insert doohickeys should I try first? I know it's probably personal preference but I don't have a clue which one to try first. This will be for 25-50 yard paper slaughtering mostly with the possibility of some brush huntin' for whitetail at similar ranges provided I find 'the load'.

Which one of them insert doohickeys should I try first?

I have the same sighting system on one of my .308 Win. Springfield rifles.

I shoot dots of the appropriate size.

Try this :

Personally I prefer the posts with or without a "bead" but that's just personal preference.

Something I have been wanting to try but haven't get there yet is a Handi "wildcat" using extremely heavy for caliber boolits... in my case about 400 grs. for .44 mag since I am set up for .44 mag. Basically the "Whisper" philosophy.

The boolit design I chose if I ever get to this is a Dr. Richard Gunn design for subsonic .45 cal. boolit ~ drawing attached.

107330

It might require a long throat to leave enough powder capacity for .45 Colt (or my scaled down version for .44 mag.) but I think would be fun to shoot.

Of course you need a fast enough rifling twist to stabilize the a boolit that long.

Just something to think about.

Looks like you got a pretty nice rifle there and has been said... it is only expensive for those with no interest and that is not you!

Enjoy!

I have a 450g .458 I could size back to .454 with a push through sizer. If it'll fit, I will see just how far out I can seat it.
I had the same idea Longbow. A case full of Trail Boss with a super heavy boolit. Thump!!

To quote Ben from another thread; "A brick to the side of the head doesn't have to move very fast to be deadly."

Agreed!
I wish all Handi Rifles came with that stock set. The are so much more
"single shot" in appearance to my eye. I guess though, if they all had it, there
wouldnt be that much special-ness about the colt carbines, BC's and target models

I am tickled about the stock set. It kinda hides the whole "cheap" feel of a break open action.

Nothing wrong with a good single shot. This is what I did with one.

It is my adventure gun. It has a good supply of things you need when you find yourself somewhere stupid.
Yes it gets used regularly.

OK, Dean... you know you are going to get tired of that 45 single shot rifle! When you do, let me know and we will figure out a fair compensation. Or you could just loan it to me for a while and I will check all them little thingies on the front sight and let you know which one of them is the best. :kidding:

Dean, for target shooting choose the circle that most closely matches your bullseye from the distance you are shooting. In other words, pack them all up and take them with you and experiment. Ideally you want a circle that shows just a little white around the black bullseye. This makes it easy to sight. For hunting and woods walking I want a post.

this guy must have put the dovetail on the barrel, unless he rechambered the BC 45-70 to 45LC. i have one coming in 30-30 and want the same globe sight, need to find a local smith.

are you planning on installing a reciever sight?

very nice BTW!

I'm with longbow. I use the one two inserts to the left from Ben. The post with a "bead" on it.

Well, I gots all weekend to figure it out. I just picked it up tonight. No real bad surprises but good LORD it's filthy. Really, it's NASTY!!
As fouled and gummy as the bore is, I'm just gonna make a time of it and clean out the works too. Be a good time to look for wear and 'bubba trigger jobs' whilst I'm in there.

The wood is in nice shape though. I think I'm going to be pretty pleased with it. I'm going to spend several hours with it this weekend and probably scratch up some loads too. Probably be next weekend 'fore I can git to the range.

Well, show us some real pic's dean... We saw the sale pics, how does it look at the door???

Ill get some pics up soon. I just gave it a thorough enema. Took a lot of patches and soaking to get that bore clean. Cleaned the latch and shelf spotless and left it dry. The forearm is snug against the receiver and over all fit is pretty good. Took the rear stock off to confirm it IS an SB-2 action, that's good. If I were to decide that I need to lengthen the chamber to .454 Casull it would be good to go. I noticed a bad pit in the bottom of the chamber. I hope that's not going to be an issue.

Speaking of the chamber, I had decided early on to use shortened .454 brass and I'm glad I already started gathering some. A once fired CBC .454 Casull case will almost lock into battery. It lacks about the thickness of the rim, closing into battery. Wow that's a roomy .45 Colt chamber. I'm going to pull the barrel so I can push the extractor in, then push a .454 case in gently until bottoms out, then use a depth mic to see what the difference is. I will add .005 to that number and then subtract that from the current case length to get the length I will attempt to use.

All in all, it will work out better for me even if .454 brass is scarce and pricey. They use small rifle primers which I happen to have a metric črap ton of. ....and honestly, running light loads with heavy boolits, at .454 brass oughta last a LONG time.

Dean, if you want nasty you should have seen the .444 I picked up in a pawn shop. To put it mildly it needed an oil and filter change, if there was a filter. Worst part was the forend had a double layer of electric tape down the channel, and the hinge pin was shimmed with the same tape. I correctly repaired it all, now shoots great. Unbelieveable what some people do. GW
