anyone had any experience using a thermal gun type themometer when smelting or casting? I was wondering about the differences in temperatures between the top, middle and bottom of the pot. I wouldn't think there would be a sinificant difference.

I have an infrared thermometer that I use mostly to monitor mould temperature. You can use it on the melt, but you need to place something non shiny on the surface. IR thermometers don't work on a shiny surface. I use either a few gas checks or a copper penny on the surface. A traditional lead thermometer is much easier to use.

I use wood sawdust on top of my melt, hopefully the charred remains will work over the shiny surface.
