It arrived last week. Very nice rifle, fit and finish is on par with a Shiloh.

45-70, of course, and 10lbs. Obviously aimed at the hunting crowd and casual shooters. Standard globe front and the old Ideal/Lyman tang rear.

Other than the DST, it is a fairly close replica of the M1877 Target Model.

The checkering is flawless, no over runs or flattened diamonds, great wood.

I plan to make ONE change, cut a dovetail where a rear buckhorn sight would go. I would love to see the accuracy with my MVA 6X scope.

Making boolits tomorrow.

That should be a fun one to shoot! I've looked at those online, very nice. Glad the fit and finnish are good. Many years ago I had a Pedersoli RB that was just plain aweful in the fit and finnish department, shot good but plain ugly! The replicas have came a long way since then!Have fun with it.

I also have quite an interest in the Lyman rifle. I would sure like to examine one instead of just looking at the catalog. May be you can post some pictures sometime soon.

Interesting, I did not know such a rifle existed. I have seen pictures of the smaller ones, .22 Hornet and .38-55, and probably would pick one of those up if I found it in person. Interested to here how it does and some pictures.

I know this thread is a year old but I just ordered one of these...any idea what to size cast bullets to? .458? .459?

Just got one of the Pedersoli 1877 Overbauch long range 45-70 rifles ( same action barrel as the Lyman 1878) and was told to get a .459 and a.460 sizer booth seem to work equally well.Have not worked out a final load for the rifle yet but it is showing it is capable of very good accuracy

I bought an 1878 last year and I'm very happy with the fit and finish. My bore slugged at .4585 so I've been using a .460 sizing die in my Lyman 4500. Neither Lyman or RCBS catalogs a .460 die so I go one from Buffalo Arms.

Thanks for the info on the size and where to get it at.

I see that the receiver is grey/silver. Is it stainless steel? Also, I read a post that the receiver is forged not cast and the barrel is cut rifled. I'd like that to be true but I can't find an official source for that info.

The Lyman model appears to have a traditional finish called French Grey.
The Pedersoli Overbaugh is color cased.

Forged receiver and cut rifling is the way Pedersoli builds Sharps guns.

I have the Cabelas Pedersoli made Long Range. Nice case hardened receiver. The barrel starts out as an octagon and then goes round. Very handsome gun (guns are handsome - not pretty :) ). A terrific shooter. With that long heavy barrel and all. I also put a Soule Tang Peep sight on the rear. Draws attention when I'm at the 200 Yard range and making big holes where none existed.

We had a new one on the range the other day, brilliant and alongside a Shiloh Sharps which was also there, it held up well, nothing in it really, but the Pedersolis are in stock and a bit over a third of the price of a Shiloh
