Hi Fellas,

While scrounging for good lead, I came across a lady who had a sailboat keel she was scrapping and she wanted 50 cents per pound, but she had no way of dividing the keel. My questions are is .50 a good price for volume pure lead, and secondly, is there any way to cut up a 4,000 lb. chunk of our favorite metal?

Thank you very much for any information.

One Gun Andy

P.S. I passed on the offer and can supply you with her contact info if you are anywhere near the south central PA northern DE area.

I don't think that is too bad a price and would be there tonight if i didn't live in IL. Get a chain saw and cut it into sizes big enough for your pot.

That's a LOT of work for $0.50/lb.

Where I live, the scrap yards would offer her $.25 per pound if she delivered it to them!

Yeah, what he said. She should be paying you to haul it off.
btw- chainsaw will cut it up. Use a mask!

.40-.45 cents per pound at a local scrap yard in our area.

$.50 is bit to much for that. The last four boats I picked up off craigslist were for free.

Just my $0.02 and not wanting to sound like "Safety Sam", but chain saws can be dangerous, even in experienced hands and cutting something other than trees . I would suggest renting a gas powered "chop saw" The one with the 16" metal cutting blades. Being in Pa. see if you can find any muzzle loaders or other BP shooters and ask for help with payment in lead.

Will a Milwaukee SawZall work? I've used mine for everything else. One of the best tools you can buy! I don't know how thick the lead is, but as with using a chain saw on a tree, you only have to go in half way, then start again from the other side. Try to beat her up on the price. Asking price is just a price to start negotiating from.

Are you sure it's pure lead? I thought they used what ever was available for ballast?

Tooooooo Much $$$$$ for Unknown alloy, could be anything in the lead.

Too Much Work involved also.

Check local scrap prices, (your delivery).

I get lead here in Tucson at .25 - .50 per pound depending on what scrap yard and the mood of the proprietor. too high a price for you to cut it up, plus it's going to be a mess.

This. My weed burner and I would be happy to make that giant piece of lead's acquaintance. Let's see: last time I used it I got about 400 pounds of lead melted before the propane ran out. Figure 10 refills to melt it in to ingots at $22 per refill on the tank. 220 bucks. That's 5 cents a pound, give or take. Whatever the alloy, that seems like a deal to me!

Anti-fouling boat bottom paint is really, really nasty stuff. I get sick just thinking about the smell of burning anti-fouling paint. Grinding on it is no fun either.

If it were me. Id ask to cut a chunk off big enough to take to a scrap yard and have them check it with an x-ray scanner and see what I was dealing with and take it from there. But yeah that is a lot of work for .50 a pound.

Say no to her, tell her it's a hazmat removal and she can call the pro's and pay THEM to remove it. Then see what she say's.

Here you have to pay over a buck a pound for any lead so I'd jump on that deal but then 2 ton keels are scarce as hens teeth around here.

Get a good circular saw and spend the 28.00 at Home depot for a "Milwaukee 7-1/4 in x 48 Carbide Tooth Circular Saw Blade" It will go through it like butter! My BIL has them and cut through a big ol chunk of lead alloy I had sitting around that was too big for the pot..... took all of 3 seconds
