Anybody have any 1st hand experience with this mold and a Ruger handgun? Any experience with it will be O.K. too even if it isn’t with a Ruger!!!

I did a search and found limited info posted here...

I know the general talk is the 452424 is the most popular for the 45 Colt but I think the .454” RCBS sounds a bit better with the larger diameter?

I just tried to order it from Midsouth Shooters Supply but it is backordered—nothing is ever in stock anymore. So now I am waiting before I place the entire order as I really don’t want to pay 2 separate shipping charges…

Regardless, I am asking about the 45-270-SAA mold.

Any stories—good or bad? Thanks…BCB

I have that mold and have cast some of those bullets.I haven't got to shoot any yet.I have a Bisley Blackhawk in 45 Colt. If I had any left I'd send you some to try but I sent them for another shooter to try. Iv'e read a lot about this bullet from different sources. Most comments are very positive. I probably won't cast any until the weather gets warmer but if I do I'll try to remember to contact you.

I have yet to get my BBH Ruger to shoot very well with any cast load, but it does about its best with that bullet.

its a good bullet. A better bullet then the 452424 in my opinion. But it tends to shoot best with a little velocty behind it.

I'm with Lloyd on this. I can't get it to stabilize unless I'm pushing it pretty good.

I tried it in a S&W 625-6, but I wasn't willing to push it fast enough to get some good groups.

I haven't gotten around to trying it in my 7 1/2 inch Blackhawk. I received a new .41 mag Blackhawk as a Christmas present from my lovely Bride. I've been spending all my time experimenting with the .41 since Christmas, I haven't shot any other guns since then.

FWIW

I have that mold - my son has 2 45LC, both Rugers 4 5/8 and 5.5 in and my hunting partner has 2 a vaquero and a Hunter model with a 7.5 in.

All 4 guns shoot that bullet with a wider range of powders (Unique and 2400) and velocities then any other 45 pistol bullet I have.

Like all Rugers, you might check your throats and make sure their .452 or over. Mine was .450.:???: After having them reamed, I worked out several loads using AA #9, HS-6, Unique, Herco and a few others. It seems to run best about 1150fps or more, and I enjoy very good accuracy. I like it much more than the 250gr. varieties.

That's the impression that I got. As I said earlier, my initial experiments have been with a S&W 625-6, and I simply wasn't willing to push that little mountain gun that hard.

However, I'm going to be going back to the .45 Colt (for load development) soon. I have sold my 625 (SPF), so I will concentrate on load development for my Ruger.

Should be interesting.

Hey Coyoot,

I have an old 25-5 with a 6 inch barrel, and have always hesitated to load it beyond the 250gr. 900fps area. I've read Linebaugh's info, but this gun is just plain not fun to shoot much past that. My buddy recently bought a NIB 625 in 45 Colt, and it is certainly not the same gun. Its got the endurance package, and he's been shooting my 255gr. 19gr. of AA#9 nearly all the time. (1280fps in 6 in. barrel) He's also loaded the same boolit over 24gr. of H110, and has not shot it loose yet. This man can shoot them loose if anyone can . Can it be that the new guns are built better? They are just not as comfortable to shoots for me- as the Rugers.

If I break down and give him some, he wants some of this 270gr. boolit. I just can't bear to part with a boolit made with the 2 cavity mold. He's going to have to help a bit. I'll let you know if the gun holds up.

That's the bullet I shoot most often from my 7.5" Redhawk. According to my notes I seemed to like two loads with it the best: 12 grains of Alliant Power Pistol, and 25 grains of 296. That second load is a pretty warm one, and I wouldn't use it in any S&W model 25 or 625.

I was surprised to read the comments that people didn't have good luck unless they pushed it moderately fast--the third load that seemed to do well for me was 8 grains of 231, which only gave it about 840 fps.

I use that boolit in my OM BH 4 5/8" 18.5 gr 2400 gives my 1065 fps and shoots as good as I can (not saying much) . It weighs 285 gr as cast from WW > My ruger had .449 cyl. I had them reamed to .4525 " leaded a bit at first so I scrubed the bore with some old Stoger barrel restorer#2 and leading went away. ymmv.

This is common in .45 BHs. Mine had .450 in the LC and .449 in the
ACP cylinder. Reamed to .452 and polished to .453, significantly improved
with all cast boolits. Strongly recommend you check throats in any
revolver, especially .45 BHs, as it has been reported here many times
that these are pretty typical dimensions and hurt accy quite a bit.

The throats in my Redhawk seemed to be about .451, although that is an extremely sloppy measurement taken with my calipers (I have no micrometer). Because I couldn't push a .452 sized 45-270-SAA through any of the chamber throats I had Cylindersmith ream them out to .4525. It now gives slightly better accuracy but noticeably less leading in the barrel.
