View Full Version : I picked up a CZ52 at an auction. Should I just replace the recoil spring?

Looks unissued with phosphate finish, came with light tan holster spare mag and cleaning rod for $175.00. I've been reading that it's a good idea to replace the spring with a 16 or 18lb wolf. Anyone have an opinion on this?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But DO NOT dry fire it! Firing pin prone to breakage. Go ahead and order the replacemdnt firing pin, rollers, springs, takedown tool, etc. against future need, but no need to replace parts until something breaks.

Mine works well with cast, Accurate 31-087T cast of 50-50 lino-ww, sized .311", 6 grains of Bullseye, 1450 fps, more accurate than FMJ.

Those roller pins are tough as nails. Pencil eraser works as a take down tool. Good guns. I ran some hot loads in mine and never had issues with the spring or rollers.

Thanks. Right now I need to see about brass, I was thinking about using 223 but wasn't sure about the inside neck turning or having the cases bulge.

I use Starline in mine.

Same here. I've messed around with this caliber since the late 1980s, and made my first brass from 500 (!) unprimed W-W 9mm Win Mag cases. That was a labor-intensive chore that was necessary, but I can live without another such project. I still have about 300 of those cases laying around.

I bought one about 30 years ago. I have only two complaints about it. 1) it flings the empties about 25ft in a 45degree angle. What a pain. 2) I read that the czechs regulated it for their submachine gun ammo, which was about 30% hotter than the russian or chinese stuff. Occasionally the gun would jam with the chinese ammo I bought, and it was a pain to clear. Other than those two items, I really like the gun. Mine shoots directly to point of aim. I have no problem with the recoil. And, I think it simply looks intimidating. I have seen conversion kits to change it to 9X19, but I would consider that retrograde. If I were to change it, I would change it to 9X23. Enjoy your pistol. mikey :D

IMO every time you buy a used firearm ( more so with a 22 or a pistol ) you should change the springs.

when you look for a spare firing pin. I strongly recommend a aftermarket pin made from machined steel instead of an original 'cast' pin.

Friend of mine recently brought me one of these (in pieces) to fix.

It seems the original firing pins were built out of very poor steel.

So the first thing I'd do is replace that, consider replacing springs like hammer spring.
Do a good visual inspection of the rollers, if there is any slop, replace them.

Last, it appears that shortening .223 brass to the correct length and then running it through the 7.62x25 die will let you make enough brass to reload. The process I saw they did not anneal the brass, although I would probably try a few each way.

The .311 sized cast bullets I make for 7.62x39 and x54r won't even consider going into a x25 case.
So you will want a .308 sized bullets for this.

Overall I think this pistol has great potential, I'm looking forward to getting it out to the range and see what it can do.

I have 3 CZ-52's with 5 barrels. I did buy a range of replacement recoil springs but use the stock springs for 7.62x25 most times. Did not replace any of the other springs or parts except one broken firing pin, I have a few spares now. I have used P38 mags with the 9x19 barrel because the stock mags do not always feed 9x19 well. I rechambered a 9x19 barrel to 9x23.

I had a lot of fun trying different loads in the three calibers including light bullets and .22's in sabots in the 7.52x25, 60 gn. Gold Dot HP at 1758 fps and 45 gr. .22 JSP in sabot at 2066 fps and some 9x23 loads with a 158gn. LRN averaging 1197 fps and a 125 gn. JHP at 1395 fps. I loaded these with a long AOL and do not seem to be pushing any limits. I have not and will not shoot 9x23WIN in it because those are higher pressure but I do split the difference between 9mm Largo and 9x23WIN.

I was just on Starline's web site and Tokarev brass now has a ship date of july 25. At least I'll have time to get the spare parts first.

I've made thousands from 223 cases.

Did you have to ream the necks? or just cut them down?
