I bought a Lee 160grRNFP mold to try & make a 45 minor load light recoiling enough to run with the 9mm guys in IDPA/ESP div. The first tries were great! My XDTac will cycle 100% with a 14# spring with the bullet running down to 750fps. Accuracy handheld @ 50ft, less than 2" & best part, POA/POI. Recoil was actually lighter than a 9mm in a slightly smaller framed gun. Now to try it at the West Coast Steel Challenge! I will have to beagle it as the bullets are coming out 0.451" with range scrap, my preferred 45acp alloy.

A 1911 has to have the exact same recoil to operate it with a light bullet as it does with a heavy. The light has to go faster and the heavier can go slower but recoil is equal. The only thing that can vary is felt recoil (not much) and that is usually best done with a very heavy bullet with the slowest powder you can get away with. It will be dirty but will be the lightest recoil you can achieve. Springs lighter than #14 are available.

This may be true for the 1911, haven't tried it, but running the 14# spring in the xd with that load is very soft. Using PF as a guide, to run a 230gr bullet that soft, it's only going to be moving 550fps. I am not sure that would be as desirable m outcome.

I have been shooting a 160 gr SWC in Bullseye for about 5 years. The guy that built my gun recommended this bullet. I push this bullet with 4.5 gr. of Bullseye powder.
This gives a softer recoil than a 200 gr SWC being pushed with 3.9 gr of Bullseye. The gun is a 1911 with a 13# recoil spring with a red dot on the slide.

Thanks Len. I am hesitant to swap out springs in my 1911s. I usually reserve them for near full power or near full power loads. The XD is so easy to change springs, it's doing double duty for me. I just wasn't sure I could get that light a bullet to run, be accurate & hit POA with fixed sights.
