I just did the throats on my GP-100. Easy, peasy DIY project. Rented reamers from 4D.

I've done several Ruger 45 cylinder. Easy and fast. Works well.

DougGuy has been doing them and I've done a few here and there for members over the years.

Nice Work Doug..........take your time going slow, use plenty of cutting oil and that's the result. :awesome:

Tap Magic! Slow and even, finish with a flapper hone of my own design. Blued ones go into the toaster oven until I can't hold them bare handed, they get oxpho blue on the freshly cut throats only. Glad you like it! :bigsmyl2:

Doug just rescued my old three screw Blackhawk 45 Colt by reaming the undersized throats. Beautiful job, and quick. I did wonder how come the new throats looked factory, didn't know about the cold blue job. Very nice!

Almost wish I had more work to send him.

Cylinder throats can often times be undersized from the bore dimensions i.e. .450 cylinder throats and a .451 groove diameter for the bore. Some Rugers I've worked on have been .449 and with the cylinder throats sizing down the boolit upon departure the trip down a bore that is larger in diameter sure does make it more difficult in keeping the barrel from leading as well as making it harder in finding accuracy.

The first NMBH 45 cylinder I did was back in '05. The six throats when slugged measured from a small of .442 to a largest of .449. I couldn't believe my slugging technique or my micrometer, had a gun smith slug and measure, he verified my readings. Needless to say, I checked every Ruger I owned, suspicious, untrusting. The rest of them were OK; but none of them were 45's.

Ok, educate me a little here. Why?

Taken from my Cylinderhone.net facebook page:

"Ruger .45 caliber revolvers are notorious for tight cylinder throat diameters. If your .452" bullet won't go into the cylinder throats from the front, then the throats are sizing down the bullets to whatever the throat diameter is before passing them on to the forcing cone/barrel. I end up reaming a lot of cylinders for people that I have to use a .450" or .4505" pilot for the reamer, because that's all that will fit into the throats, meaning by the time those guns put a bullet out the front of the cylinder, that's what diameter the bullets were.

This amounts to firing an undersized bullet which will have poor accuracy, and will cause leading in the barrel. Not to mention raising pressures from basically firing a live round into an obstruction of sorts..

Long and short of it, the path the bullet takes from the case mouth to the muzzle should be gradually getting smaller as it goes. The bullet should be sized .001" to .002" above bore diameter, the cylinder throats should be .0005" to .001" above bullet diameter, with no restrictions between.

I take in cylinders for reaming/honing, I offer this as a convenience to shooters who don't want to invest in the reamer and pilots just to do one or two cylinders."

Doug can you do a .44 mag vaquero cylinder?

oldbro

I have a Ruger 480, if Cast or jacketed bullets bullets won't enter through the front of the cylinder rearward then it needs to be reamed 5/10th to .001 more. That's the recomendation?

Yes I can do a .44 mag cylinder, send me a PM..

oldbro, to answer your question, yes you are correct. The boolits need to be .001" to .002" over groove diameter of the bore, and yes the cylinder throats need to be .0005" or so greater than the boolit diameter. If bore diameter is .475" and you are shooting .476" or .477" boolits, they should be able to be pushed into the throats from the front. What j-word boolits are you using?
