I found this in a box of old stuff from.an.estate sale years ago. Looked at it last night and realized its not a 45 acp. It's marked 45 AC which is auto cartridge. It's the round developed prior to the acp being accepted. Made in 1904 by Winchester. I've never seen another before. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/03/puryqe5u.jpg

.45 AC, I believe, stood for 'Auto Colt'. And yes, that is a very early manufacture. Those old cartridges ought to be worth a bit to collectors. Cheers!

I had no idea older primers had a dome shape to them instead of the usual flat face.

When I first started reloading (in the late forties and early fifties) domed primers were common. It was necessary to have the correct primer punch to properly seat them (domed or flat).

When I started loading in 1963, domed primers were still common. Hollywood Gunshop offered both priming posts for their presses. I think I still have a domed priming post in one of my drawers.

Good catch on the early .45 A.C. cartridge. Some collector is probably drooling all over his keyboard right now..

Hope this helps.

It was named auto cartridge first before the 1911 was introduced. Winchester and Union and and one other company were making the round for gov testing. There were several variations before union was given the ok. It was renamed to 45 acp after the invent of the 45 colt for military designation and to keep these from being fired in a 1911. They are quite a bit shorter than the 45 acp.

Whatever happened to the original .45 round that was developed for the Thompson sub machine guns? Wasn't it longer than the ACP?

Some of the old primer seating stems are cupped too. I still have rounded primers in the wooden trays

If I'm not mistaken, those ought to be loaded with a 200 grain bullet too.

Neat find, thanks for showing it.

Apparently Mr Browning was developing his 45 in 1904 when the military was looking for something to replace the 38 long colt after the phillipine fiasco. So this round was in development at the same time as his 1904 pistol. He then produced subsequently the 1911 and the ACP was born. Some cool info about stuff when you actually go looking for it. I never knew there was a pre 45acp.
