View Full Version : Replacing Front Dovetail Sight

I picked up a Lyman 17AMI front sight for my Mossberg 44US in an effort to improve my sight picture. The factory sight was easy enough to remove as it has the screw on top that tightened the dovetail insert against the barrel.

My dovetail measures about 0.356 and my Lyman 17AMI measures 0.376. In my logic I would remove metal from the sight and not from the dovetail in the barrel. $38 vs. $375

Am I correct?

It is always preferable to work on the cheapest part.

Yes, just file from one side only. Also, measure the sight. Some have a base that is different widths on each end and some aren't. Good to know what you're starting with.

Actually you file off the BASE of the sight dovetail this narrows the dovetail and doesn't mess up the angles.

Not an "actually" really. I always did it that way and I just received a Skinner front blade and he suggests taking it off one side. Maybe he doesn't know the correct way to do it?

Very interesting idea. Hadn't thought of that. As long as the dovetail has enough height to allow it to clear the barrel, this seems like the simplest way.
