View Full Version : bp makers: Are the various 45-70 lengths due to a need accomodate screened powder?

I was thinking a few months ago that the various lengths of 45-70 cartridges were an accomodation for those who screened their powder rather than compressing and corning their bp.

45-70. 70 grns

45-90. Approximately 75% weight of homemade versus commercial. Assuming compression with a rural bench vise.
Maybe 450 - 600 lbs.

45-100 app 70% of the weight of commercial. A regular sized bench vise. Maybe 250 to 450 lbs.

45-110 approximately 65% the weight of commercial. Not very much compression.

45-120 60% the weight of commercial which seems to pop up frequently. Screened but not compressed.

Any thoughts on this?

No, by the time those cartridges were introduced you could buy either factory ammunition or good quality factory made gunpowder. They just allow you to have more or less power, depending on your needs. Bigger cartridges shoot bigger boolits better, over longer ranges. The 3 1/4 inch case is kind of an outlier, not all that accurate and more for hunting rather than target use. Also much more recent than the others.

In order to make a boolit go further with holy black you either have to lighten the boolit or make the case longer....

Thanks. Sometimes thinking in reverse gets you nowhete. Lol.

Have you considered corning your powder?

I will be but I am moving and the press is packed away at the moment. When I get settled in the press goes back up and we start corning.

Great! the corned powder will work.It may be a bit lighter, but not much.Just be sure & weigh
it & don't go buy volume measure.

The powder is going to be tested every which way but loose as some measuring early on will minimize the failures of the future. It is also a rather good adventure to hypothesize, measure and decide the next experiment.
