Qusetion for you 38-55 shooters.I have a 38-55 with a 1in 18 twist. i would like to start shooting black powder with a heaver boolit say 300/330 grains.what twist would you put on the rifle i have that would shoot with theses boolit weights? im shooting a 250 grain now but really need a new mold so your thoughts will be helpfull. would like to stay with a 28/30in barrel. thinks bill

The question is what do you want to do with it and how far do you want to be accurate?

If BPCR Silhouette 14 twist, or better still, 12 twist
The 14 T will handle up to the 1.3' Long 330gr bullets
The 12 twist is the much better silhouette rifle using 350 - 365gr bullets and will make your ram score happier.
If NRA mid-range is the game the same applies as Silhouette.

If just fun shooting the bare minimum for the 330gr bullet is 15 T. The old Badgers were 15's and were on the lame side for the long games in tough conditions. Just not enough bullet or twist to get there in conditions.

im not really a target shooter but would like to be able to shoot 250/300 yd. mostly hunting. if i got the 12 twist that would cover all the bases would,nt you say.I shoot alot of black powder but new to the cgt. guns.

My 1:18 twist H&R shoots Accurate's 295gr. .366" slick, paper patched to bore diameter, very well on out to 500M. For just playing around a new barrel isn't needed unless you just gotta have one.

The 15 twist Badger on my C-Sharps 75 shoots the Lyman 335gr very well to 600yd. In heavy winds it would struggle for sure though.
Depends on what you are hunting. Personally with BP I wouldn't take a shot over 125 to maybe 150yd for a great buck with a rest. Past that range estimation is absolutely critical.

My Hiwall has a 1:12" twist and I use these 375gn boolets from a Paul Jones mould

They group well enough for my old eyes and are perfectly stabilised going through paper!

Shooting black powder using a 38-55 with a 1:18 twist … the old Ideal 375166 calculates to 17.65 twist factor.
Background:
Don Miller did an excellent article for the Spring 2007 issue of the Black Powder Cartridge news entitled … A New Twist Rule Applied to Black Powder Rifles. In his very extensive calculation, he determined that the Ideal 375166 bullet has the best ballistics characteristics in a BPCR with a 1:18 twist for a 38-55. I have shot the bullet extensively out to 500 meters and IMO, Don Miller was correct

The Accurate Mold clone of the 375166, 320gr is the 38-320E on page 4 of the catalog with dimensions ... excellent mold too

i have a traditional hunter 38/55 ,,15 twist , ok at 100 yds , with 335 lyman and 3fffg , not much info beyond that would love to hear more ---wade
