Finally a break in the winter! I shot the old pre-war target .38 today, and dont this thing shoot! 2.7 grs of bullseye with the 358091 (144 gr,WW) and this old gun will do any easy sub 2 inch @ 25 yards. Very pitted throat and all! Best part is my youngest boy (7 years old) shot the 8 inch steel gong repeatedly @ about 15 yards! Thought he might be about ready to experience a handgun, and wasnt i happy for him! Apparently, the old smith fits him pretty well! The best part about this old gun is the trigger, and action. Absolutely glass smooth, and zero creep.Thats the biggest reason i bought it. O YEAH, forgot to mention, i payed 146 bucks for it at a pawn shop, 3 years ago or so. Think i got a good buy!

My experience with older guns (with less than perfect bores) is similar to yours. A pitted bore is not necessarily death-to-accuracy. I have fired several that are as accurate as newer guns with "perfect" bores. The only problem is cleaning them is a much longer job than those with perfect bores.

358091 is a super boolit. My Mod 60 .38 has seen a steady diet of them for years (and is full of them right now in my pocket). My standard practice load for my SP101 .357 is 358091 over 7.5 grains Herco, 1050 fps in the 2.25" barrel.

Old Smiths. Wadcutters. Ice Cream. The finer things in life.

I have an older 5 screw target model .38 Smith, (1930's?), and it absolutely loves the same load you mention, and has given me alot of 1" or less 25 yard groups. It shoots most other loads like crap, but thats OK. I got lucky when I got mine, the bores excellent. I paid about 250$ years ago. You got yours CHEAP. I bet you will get alot of enjoyment out of it.
