The powder situation being what it is, I will soon run out of IMR 4227 which is my go to military caliber powder for cast as per Ed Harris' article on the subject. I have been extremely pleased with 4227 in 30-40 (Krag and Ruger) 30-06 and even 30-30. But alas, I can find it nowhere for love nor money.

I have however obtained a pound of N110 from Vihtavouri. This is not to be compared to H110. It is an extruded single base powder slightly slower than 2400 and slightly faster than 4227. I have read that it can be substituted fir 2400 at a 2gr lower rate (ie if Harris refers to 16 grs 2400 as the "universal prescription" one might start with 14 grs N110).

However, I would appreciate hearing your experience with N110, your views to its suitability and any quirks or characteristics you may have identified.

Just an fyi, I found several discussions on the interweb in which our Nordic friends are using N110 in loads for the Mosin 7.65x54r, a Finnish variant the 8x54r, and the 8x57 with cast bullets in the 180 gr - 210 gr range at 17 to 19 grs, which seems entirely in keeping with "16 grs 2400 is the Universal Load".

Should work about the same as your 4227.

At the pressures in question, it basically loads 1:1 with 2400.

12gn N110 in a .223 with 55gn lyman runs 2397fps out of a 24" barrel with sub-2MOA accuracy (what that barrel produces with factory FMJ - same barrel does 0.3MOA with 69gn Sierras)

16gn N110 in .308" with Lyman 160gn bullet as cast, gc'd @.312" in a Beretta M1 Garand, shoots rather well but doesn't cycle.

Thanks very much for the additional information

I use it in my ruger-only .45 colt loads and it will generally give more velocity with less pressure than similar charges of 2400.

It burns very cleanly, too.
