I have a mod "a" southbend 9" swing with QC and threading attachment. 4' bed. Would not take 10k for it. I can make a .0005 cut on it anytime. several barrels and a lot of other "projects" are proof of the pudding. Love mine. You are now officially ADDICTED.[smilie=l:

I have had a metal lathe since I was 22. After 5 upgrades/purchases and almost 40 years (!), I now have a SB 9 ultra-accurate tool room lathe with quick change gears. Love it. It and 4 other lathes make up my metal lathe collection. It's nice to have several you can do different operations on without tearing down anything.

Congrats on getting it going. As I have said many times, there are only two kinds of quality tools out there "Big ol' gooduns and good ol' bigguns!" Size (weight and rigidity) DOES matter.

have fun!

i started at 21 bought my first lathe a 12" atlas that was sold by sears. it had the change gears. about 20 years later i bought a 14 1/2" southbend toolroom lathe i can get 4 1/2' between centers. about two years later i picked up a 9" southbend with 4' bed and quick change. i sold the atlas. i have 2 more 9" southbends setting out on the trailer.

my first mill was a clausing 8520 vertical mill. it is small 6" x 24" table. but it is nice for gun work. next i picked up a 12" vernon shaper. then i added a 6x36 powermatic horizontal mill. then i added a full size enco vertical mill 8 x 42. then a jones and shipman 6x18 surface grinder.

Yes,when it comes to computers I am not the sharpest knife in the box.

They are both Whitworths,The match Rifle is .568 Calibre,The Military one is .451 calibre. Both rifles where in a shocking state when I got them so I have sympathetically restored them.Surprisingly the bores are good.I have been developing a Load and bullet for the Match rifle Check out the MLAGB Forum under Musket and Rifle Large Calibre Whitworth rifle.

Nope you did alright, it's much more fun looking at fine rifles than lathes!

Of course personally I love to talk lathes and shop machinery also and was delighted to see this thread, Beeman keep us posted on the progress!
