I have recently purchased a Rem 25R carbine in 25-20. I'm having a little trouble getting it to group like I want it to. I'm casting a 72 grain boolit (supposed to be 65 but it isn't) gas check out of a lyman mold. They look beautiful, and weight consistently. I've tried unique and 4198, with neither grouping well at 50yds. I'm new to cast bullets in a rifle, and to the 25-20. I have a 25R in 32-20, and it is doing a bit better than the 25-20. Both have mint barrels, and the 25-20 has a tang sight on it. I would appreciate any tips or loads to try in either rifle. Also any tips on the rifles themselves. Thanks in advance, Tom

My 25 liked 3.5 grains of HP38 with the 257285. It's long gone but shot quite well, even with a badly corroded throat.

I'll try it if I can find some HP38. Thanks.

Tom, you did not mention what charge weight you've tried with Unique. I use 4.0 gr. with the RCBS 25-85-CM plain base and get useable squirrel hunting accuracy. Also god luck with 3.8 gr. of Trailboss.

I had excellent results with Blue Dot and the 257420. Try 4.0 to 4.5 gr B'dot.

TBryan,

Welcome to the forum. Here is a list of compiled loads. Each gun is unique unto itself. Use at your own risk:

What are you sizing your bullets to? - Have not seen any mention of that. Fill the throat. Go to the "Marlin Owners" website and find the "25-20 Reloaders " thread. There are no less than 92 pages of beyond excellent info on reloading the 25-20. You wont be sorry. I would embed an active link here - but don't know how.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will work through them until I get the results I want. I am sizing my bullets to .257 because that is the only sizing die I located. I'm looking for a .258 to try also.

I will also look thru the Marlin owners page. Thanks for that info. These are really neat little pump guns, and I would like to make them shoot.
The page with all the loads is excellent. I printed that one out.

I size .259 and .260 for my Win. 92 and Savage 23B . If your as cast size is closer to .260 you could hand lube some and see if it makes a difference. Just make sure they will chamber before you load up too many. Suspect that will improve you somewhat. Worth a try.

My mold is a gas check design. Will it hurt to not use the gas check, or should I just stick it on the bottom?

I have a Lyman 87 gr. mold for my Savage 23. At 1350-1400 fps it does just as well without the gas check. I haven't pushed it much harder so I don't know at what point you will need one.

If you have a Lyman or RCBS lube sizer it is easy to seat gc's without sizing. Just push the boolit down until the gc seats and stop. Lyman makes a block that stops the stroke there. I have one but it is easier to do it by feel.

I'm going to try it with and without the gas check then. Maybe that will point me in the right direction.
