Just wondering if you guys think my alloy is to hard. I don't have a hardness tester yet buy I will. I shot these out of my revolver (2" jframe) @ about 6 - 700 fps and found them in the backstop like this. Not the best medium I know but I expected some deformation. Backstop was sand and Pea gravel. TIA!

The range scrap I've collected mostly all looks like that, unless it hits a rock or another boolit.

about the only thing i ever seen expand out of a snubby was an upside down hb wadcutter

Got a full sized (4-6") revolver to try 'em in? Pure Pb and some tin should be plenty hard for 700 fps.

You'll never know for sure without a hardness tester.

At 600-700 fps I don't think you could get any expansion with even pure lead. I have shot pure lead round balls out of .36 and .44caliber cap and ball revolvers at about 900 fps, and get little or no expansion, just rifling marks.

Im sure there are people on this forum that will test the hardness for you if you send them a few samples... I am one of them! If you want to be sure of hardness you can either buy a Lee hardness tester or send a few and I will do it for you. If you want send me a PM

At what velocity do you guys find constantly reliable expansion?

in my experience, the only time i have seen "expansion" is when i hit the steel gong. if it is a hard lead there will be little to no deformation.... and not much more if it were pure lead.

I suspect they are NOT too hard.

That said, you cannot determine that with a 2" .38 Special.

It is virtually impossible to get any expansion with that firearm.

Fired from an 1-7/8" .38 Spl., through 4 layers of denim into water. They look identical when fired into pine wood, either across grain, or with it. 50% WW, 50% pure lead, air cooled, HP pre-plugged with boolit lube. NOT fired at 600 fps either. :)
