I walked up on a similar deal 4 years ago. Mine was a 2005 model, had been refinished with Robar black finish, had a beautiful set of Hogue checkered Pau ferro grips, all the springs had been upgraded and the gun had a steel grip frame. In the used section. The clerk agreed with me that it didn't look as if it had been fired and everything was with it that came from the factory, including the fired case and it was still in the sealed manila envelope. OEM grips were there too. Priced at 350 out the door; and out the door it went. Gun smith receipt was in the box for all the work that had been done on it. Great gun; but I already favored 41 Magnum and had several, just not a NMBH.

LUCKYDAWG13:
There are many molds out there for the .41's. You can't go wrong with the Lyman 410459. This is their (Lyman's) version of the
original Keith design. There are also Lee (the cheapest) money wise, RCBS, and many custom makers.
My first handgun (1968) was the 3 screw Ruger BH in .41 magnum. It also had the 4 5/8" barrel. I shot thousands of rounds
through it. I sold it to my uncle. It still shoots good.
You will enjoy the .41 magnum. Good snag sir.

I have that exact same revolver and I LOVE it!!! Like you I got it at an unheard of discounted price and knew why when I got it. The trigger pull was 8 1/2 lbs!!! I did a search for spring fixes and found a page that outlined very simple "adjustments" to one spring. I followed the easy instructions to the "T" and wound up with a smooth, crisp 3lb trigger pull. The link is easy to find with a google search if you need it. You are gonna LOVE that pistol!!!

The Keith mold is good, I use it for heavy loads. There's another Lyman mold that is really good, provided you don't mind gas checks, #410610. It's 215 grain and in semi wadcutter form. I use 2400 as powder and, after buying a lot of Winchester cases from a store, put in an order to Starline brass for 500 cases. The Starline brass is a little softer and easier to work with. The best dies out there are RCBS, I usually go with the cheaper Group B dies. Mine are #18512. Thats 3 die, carbide. Has it's own belling die. That's just what I do.

With 2400 magnum powder, it runs from 14 grains to 16 grains. The top loads are seriously NOT for the faint of heart in a 41 mag. It's big enough for any North American game, moose, elk and bear (uh oh).

Good Luck,
Ron

PS: I'm a bit jealous, I was wanting the shorter version of my 6&1/2" Blackhawk.

105935 This one is mine!

You will enjoy 41 magnum. Here's my story:

I bought a Blackhawk but, did load development with a 14" TC Contender single shot. I loaded up 5 rounds of each during the springtime. It was early spring and very cool that morning. So, I just grabbed up an old particle board desktop and a paper target. Went to the range and propped up my target board at 50 yards. I started shooting the 14 through 15 grain range. Target board kept falling down because I had just propped it up with a single 2x2 stick. At about 15 grains, it started to come down rather than shooting a high arc. I think I was at about 15.5 when I hit the bullseye. Board fell down so, I walked up to pick it up.

When I got there, I discovered that I hit the bullseye perfect and split that 2x2 at the same time. Even left a bullet trail on the grain of one stick. Blew that thing apart and kept traveling like nobody's business! Just pick up some good ear protection, muzzle blast is pretty serious. Friend of mine called the 41 mag, " ******"!

I had a ex girlfriend that didnt like me buying guns every week. so i would take a case with me and she would say where you going, i would say ohhh going to sell a gun/or going to get a gun worked on. But the case was empty. she finally caught on that i was buying guns, after my cabinet was over flowing and was looking to buy a safe. Then i got smart, i would only go to the gun shop when she was at work. hahahaha. Yes if i were going into the store for powder and saw BlackHawk for 300, there would be no powder in the truck on the way home, there would be a new toy going with me.

Good gun but it will never be a .44 no matter what. I have shot many, even have a BH here right now, recoil and noise is up there but it is still not a .44. I never bought one but will not kick one down the road either.

I would buy about any Blackhawk for $300 these days unless it had been used as a shuffleboard puck, whether I needed or not, whether it was "my caliber" or not. Crazy..when the price of "assault" rifles went crazy, everything else went with it. Remember the days of under $100 SKS's? $60 Mosin's?

$300 for a good condition NM BH is a very good deal indeed. I'd snag it up if you so desired.

As far as the 41 vs 44 debate. In the real world, if the 41 can't get it done, it's unlikely the 44 would either. That's when I break out the 1895GS with full tilt 45/70 loadings. If it can't get it done, I just need to go home or I really didn't plan accordingly......and my day's about to get a whole heck of a lot worse.

The 41is a good intermediate caliber between the 357 and the 454. I no longer own a 44. I prefer my RH 41 to my BH 41. Both are a blast to shoot and cheap fun with cast bullet hand loads. You can not go wrong at $300!

As was previously stated, "If a .41 will not stop it, I would not bet my life on a .44".
Actually, it is a .410 as opposed to a .429 . That's only .019 difference.

What did I do?

You just bought one of the best six-gun cartridges there is. And one of the better six-guns on the market, the Ruger is a great platform for it.

I suggest Starline brass, Powders can go from Bullseye, 700X, Titegroup, WW231/HP38 & probably a few others for light loads to Unique, Herco, Titegroup, WW231/HP38 & others for mid loads, & 2400 & slower powders for heavy loads.
I'd pick a good bullet mould from Lyman, RCBS, Lee, in a SWC of about 220grs. With this you'd be suited for most any kind of shooting. It's a very versitle cartridge, usually very accurate, pleasant to shoot, some say more pleasant than the .44 Mag, but with heavy loads in each I personally don't think there is a lot of difference in felt recoil.
Enjoy that ctg.

Personally I wouldn't lie to my Wife about it Lying in a marriage really messes up trust.
Good shooting, you are going to enjoy that .41.

That's a great buy. I have an old 3 screw RBH in 41 mag that I really love. Favorite bullet is the clone of the H&G #258.

huntrick64

Good buy, I have a few of them. If you plan on keeping it, my first mold would be a Mihec #258 (I believe it is a copy of the old H&G 258). It throws about a 223 grain keith (with WW alloy) that is absolutely an awesome bullet. Make sure you check the cylinder throats for proper size and consistency. I opened mine where a bullet sized .411 could be pushed through with thumb pressure. Then make sure there is not a thread constriction in the barrel. This is more than likely and it will lead if not lapped out. I stumbled onto a 41 mag years ago and I can't quit buying them. I know it is a problem, but it is a good problem. This caliber is loadable all over the scale from 800 fps - 1,500 fps with various powders like HP-38, Unique, Power Pistol, Blue Dot, 2400, 296/110, and my favorite recently is 300MP. Make this caliber a new passion and pretty soon you will have to choose which one to take out without making the others mad.

huntrick,

While I've used BlueDot for years, alliant has pulled all data for the 41 using BlueDot and currently recommends not using BlueDot in the 41 due to pressure spikes they saw in review testing. It's a shame as I have a 5 pound jug downstairs. Guess ill use more in my 357/45colt.

Osteodoc,

Thanks for the reminder on BlueDot. I haven't used it for about 2 years now because I had heard of that info, but recently forgot about it. I ran out and bought an Spanish 28 gauge side-by-side to use up the BlueDot. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Just loaded up some .41 loads using Blue Dot and 210 SWC. I'm a .41 nut and have no need for a .44 :) Molds I use are a Lee single cavity (free) .411 195gr SWC TL, Saeco .411 210 gr SWC (borrowed, 2 cav) and a Ranch Dog TL-411-255 RF (6 cav, boolits avg 268 grs wheelweights). Shoot them all out of my 4" Smith 58, 6.5" Ruger NMSBH, 14" TC Contender and 20" Marlin 1894S. My light loads are using the 195/210 gr's under 8 grs Unique and full loads are using W296/H110 or AA9. Did two trips to Alaska last 2 yrs and my carry ammo was the RD boolit under a good dose of W296 carried in the Smith.

LUCKYDAWG, The RCBS 210 SWC works good for me. Revolvers are Blackhawk and Redhawk. For whatever reason that bullet even feeds pretty well through my Marlin 1894. 2400 powder is your friend and Starline brass is as good as it gets. JW
