I was recently given a Lyman 311241, 150 gr mold. Can anyone tell me what this bullet would typically be used for? Round nose, flat base, no gas check. I'm thinking 30-06 or .308, but wouldn't those calibers need a gas check? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I like mine because no gas check is required. I shoot a lot of them as cast and lubed with 45-45-10. Quick and easy for a good practice load in several rifles. The only issue I have is that mine casts my bullet trap alloy at .314 which has caused chambering issues with a couple of rifles unless seated very deep. I use it a lot in a couple of M94 rifles. I also size it to .311 and lube with Ben's Red with good success in all 30 caliber rifles. I never shoot anything faster than 1800-2000 fps and with proper sizing a gas check isn't really mandatory. I consider my 311241 a gem. I think you'll enjoy it, gas checks aren't cheap any more.

Sounds like an awesome thutty-thutty boolit. Mine are pretty much plinkers anyway, no need for much velocity so a GC would be a waste anyway.

That is an excellent design for modest velocities. Its been popular enough that a group buy is ongoing. Ben, the plainbase shaman, has posted some quite excellent groups. Comparatively small charges of pistol/shotshell powders will launch that design at the proper velocity.

I was a school principal for 15 years, I know I was called a lot of different names, but " Shaman "........That may just be a new one.

Sorry for the hijack- Mr. Ben, Thanks for letting that cat out of the bag. That explains the guilty nervous feeling when I read your post!
