Hi guys, i recently smelted some range scrap and recovered 16lbs of copper jackets. after i sifted out the slag and dirt and removed all steel with a big magnet, i took em to a scrap yard and was told that the metal had gotten too hot and they wanted to pay me 40 cents a pound when copper is going for 2.50 per lb. Anyone have any experience with jackets? thx

I think that guy was just jerking your chain, and didn't want to pay what it was worth, IMO. I have sold scrap copper before, top money goes for #1, which is clean copper, no solder on it. #2 pays next, has solder joints. I have sold corroded cu pipe, with paint on it, and got paid #2 rates. Sorry, no experience selling jackets. Try running it through a tumbler and clean the jackets up, or go to a different scrap yard.

When a businessman lies to me, I cease doing business with them.

A lot of yards won't take jackets even if cleaned up. You should have gotten #2 price for them. But it's also their yard and they can offer whatever they want to pay. You don't have to accept it.

Yeah and I'd offer them .10/lb for their dirty bent up lead.

It really depends on the yard. For a while many places wouldn't take the and I was offering $1/lb to people who had them. Take yours to a different yard if you have options.

Or find a way to recycle them yourself. (I'm teaching myself about casting copper)

Better than the yards around here. They won't touch them.

I did the same thing a few weeks back and the guy there told me it was brass and offered me $1.49 a pound

What's the difference if you burn the insulation off of copper wire? They will still pay top dollar, burnt is better.........it's all pure copper.

It might be best to find someone else to buy your jackets.

No, they won't pay top dollar. You won't get #1 and may get #2 price. I stopped burning it off because it wasn't worth the effort. Every yard is different. There is #1 price and then there is Bright Bare which some yards pay even more for.

I had close to 50lbs of jackets after cleaning up 300+lbs of range scrap. I got 2.40 something for it. They had medical cores I bought for .85 per lb. I was more than happy.

I give mine to the pa-in-law (he picks up aluminum cans too). He's got from $1.80 to $2.20 a lb. for 'em here.

Well, i went to another yard and found out that quite a bit of the jackets were brass. scratched several and got gold color not copper. they gave me red brass prices and said , we will take all you bring in. 1.80 per lb and I'm ok with that.
