What kind of range do you get from one of these? Thinking of a .45, 1 in 30 twist.

1:30 twist in 45 caliber will stabilize a 1 inch long boolit no problem, so about 300 - 350 grains. A 45-70 loaded with a boolit that size is plenty good to 300 yards or more, so a muzzleloader is going to be the same or a little better since you can put more powder in it than a 45-70 will hold if it is more accurate that way.

TC New Englander altered to .458" bore diameter and 24" twist to shoot as cast .457"-.458" lubed boolits and paper patched: I don't wash 45-70 brass no mo'!

I have two of the .50 1-28" GM barrels. One is a rifle-length and remains unfired due to time constraints. :-(

The other is a carbine-length and it shoots better than I can, out to 150 yards or so. My eyes won't do it justice beyond that.

just finishing buliding one. a oregon barrel co. barrel. 1/30 twist, .450 to .458. just finishing the wood work. sighted in, in the ruff, with a swaged .440 bullet 330 grain. sighted in at 35 yards and every bullet went through the first hole. paperpatched with number 9 onion skin. i have several that can shoot way out their and this one could but it will be a companion gun to walk with. good for rabbits and also keep me from being mountain lion lunch. i use 60 grains of black horn 209 powder behind the bullet which gives it the same power as a 45/70 with a light 330 grain bullet.

I used to shoot a friends 45-70 years ago. He loaded 300 grain bullets to 1900 fps, kicked like a mule. He also loaded some 500 grain bullets that barely chambered. I was thinking of a 500 yard range but did not know how the 1 in 30 twist would do as I have no experience with bullet guns. It is a 28 inch barrel. When paper patching what type of base is best?

What are you using to ignite the BH 209 in a caplock?

I think you have to use 209 primers. There are nipples for that including enclosed ones. I want to use percussion caps or musket caps and black powder.

Thanks Fly.
drago, I have a Hot Rod Hawken that is a 45 cal 1-30 twist. I am using a paper patched RCBS 11mm rifle bullet. I use 80 gr of pyrodex P with a wool felt over powder wad. I use a pinch of bore butter to lube.
Here is a picture of it.

This is what the bullet looks like.

I have Lyman 57 SML peep sights on it with a Lyman 17 aml globe sight. I use a Lee Shavers BPCR insert that is for LONG RANGE.
This rifle is sight in for 300 yards but I have a small adapter below the sight between the sight and the tang. I could probably get 600 yards out of this set of sights. The RCBS bullet is 406 to 409 grains depending how much alloy I use. I try to keep them between 7 and 8 BHN. The bullet is .446 and I size them after I wrap them to .446. They don't need a lot of pressure to get them to seat.

This is a super dependable load and rifle combo. It is my favorite rifle. Ron

both kind of bases work. black powder is very accurate. i switched to 209 powder because as i get older i just want to shoot with out all the wipeing. magspark nipples with shot gun primers in them ignite 209 powder. ron uses pyrodex i think p powder and he gets x ring results. lots of variables and most will work. take your choise and have fun.

Thanks!

We'd discussed it before and I was curious if you got the magspark or one of the others in the thread that was on here several months ago. I still want to try one of the adapters but it's just not at the top of my list of stuff yet.

I have a long range rifle, 30" long, .45, 451 slug, 430 grains, 1-20 twist, that I have shot at 500 meters with great accuracy at Friendship. I have shot some tight groups at 200 with peep sights, 5 shots, with nearly all holes touching.
