Just like the title says - a buddy who gave me this nice rebarreled Spanish 1916 in 8mm got his new NOE mold in 216 grain weight, and was curious what load data was to be had, since everything he could find ended about 185. He is a big proponent of 8mm, if you haven't noticed, ;) , and it seems to be a very versatile round.

30gr of IMR3031 should work well.

pleanty of 200gr bullet data, I'd look and start there.

I was looking to see if anyone might have used that specific boolit, if possible. :) He is casting them up in his garage right about now...:D

I use 35gr H4895 with the Karibiner which is a tad heavier. I get 1,850fps.

What dia. are you sizing to ?

You know, I have that mold. Fine looking boolit. Haven't gotten it to shoot that well out of anything yet, and that puzzles me greatly.

I don't have the mold or sizing die here, just the reloading dies for now. A quick check with the calipers says the boolits are .323 diameter. I also chrono'ed the targets above if anyone is interested in the data.
jonk, I think the last pic shows that this boolit likes to strip if pushed even slightly too hard...but I could be wrong. Might have been the hot barrel by that time.

A lot of 8 mm Mausers don't shoot well with cast bullets until you use a .325 " or .326 " dia. cast bullet.

I'm using supplied boolits that have worked well in his Mausers in the past - I don't have a mold in this caliber yet. :) The barrel isn't as old as the 1916 receiver. It's a young pup with lots rifling from 1947, IIRC. I might get the 175 grain Lee mold sometime in the future, but I have no gas checks, mod, sizer, nada, just the dies and such. Having fun, though - testers loaded today with Unique and H4895 powders.
I checked and Lee doesn't make a .325 or .326 sizing die, unfortunately. I don't have a lubrisizer. Perhaps I could look into the mystery of paper patching as an option? Not being flippant, just wondering out loud.

Thanks, that's the type of setup for I use for 9mm, 7.62x39mm and 38. :) Made by that very same guy. I could use a flat bottom melting pan like that, though...

But what I was referring to is that I use Lee push through dies, not a lubrisizer, so I cant buy a top punch and such for one in an odd size. :)

so I cant buy a top punch and such for one in an odd size.

Buckshot will make you a push thru sizing die in any diameter you want.

or

You could buy a Lee .323 " push thru sizer :

http://www.titanreloading.com/lube-sizing-kit/323-lee-bullet-lubricating-sizing-kit

Then take a wooden dowel ( that is slightly smaller than .323 " ) , split it on the end for about 3/8" , insert some .220 grit sand paper , spin it in an electric drill and open up a Lee Push thru sizer pretty quickly. When you get within .0005" of your intended sizing diameter put the 220 paper away and switch over to 600 grit to put the final polish on the interior of your die.

That sounds like a project for my buddy the gunsmith. I don't have a lot of disposable cash, one of the reasons I got into casting and reloading in the first place. :) I'll ask him and ask him if he slugged this barrel - if not I'll see about getting an unsized boolit to do so with. I'm not a tinkerer - I usually like to use equipment as-is. I know, anathema around here, but that's the way I am, sorry. :) Perhaps saving up for a sizer from Buckshot would be the idea to use, if I decide to go that direction.
Might be the design,

You know, I have that mold. Fine looking boolit. Haven't gotten it to shoot that well out of anything yet, and that puzzles me greatly.

I understand, you have at least two options as to fitting the bullet to your specific barrel.

Well, I got it back out today...which turned out to be a terrible range day. Wind was gusting over 20 MPH, and my target stand kept blowing over, even with imitation sand bags on the legs. The chronograph was dead...I left it on. Whoops. That turned out to be a lot less important than I had thought, though.
The other powder my friend had sent me to try with this bullet was Unique, so using the Lyman data, here we go....and it went downhill from the first round.

^ That one is just...wow. Note the tape covered bullet shaped hole lower left...that belongs to this group. At this point I was ready to throw in the towel, BUT....BUT I had decided to use up the last 16 bullets he'd given me with a traditional rifle powder that I had a little left of, H4895. So, I reset the target stand, added rocks to the pile, aimed and fired...

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/armoredman/range%20trip/Spanish%201916%20Mauser/H489527gr_zps729a4a28.jpg (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/armoredman/media/range%20trip/Spanish%201916%20Mauser/H489527gr_zps729a4a28.jpg.html)

I heard an angelic choir singing Queen's "We Are The Champions"....I was ready to give up on this combo, but it simply looks like this bullet HATES fast pistol powders, and would FAR prefer a slow rifle powder. I need to get some more of them and some more H4895. :)

Ben
06-16-2014, 11:43 PM
Not a thing wrong with the obvious. It jumps out at you.
That rifle with the fast powders isn't stabilizing the bullet ? ?

It could be that the IMR 4895 load increased the speed and stability of your bullets, hence improving the accuracy of the rifle greatly ?
