OK , I am in the process of de coppering one of my FAL's to shoot cast

I have to slug the barrel

I have a varity of 30 cal GB , Lyman and RCBS moulds I plan on trying
I have great luck with the 168 gr RCBS Sil. bullet in one of my bolt guns ( not the other )
As I have a bunch cast but not sized , I plan on trying them first if the bore riding nose is large enough for the FAL barrel

I normaly shoot 2400 and Red Dot in the bolt gun , but figured they would be a poor choice for a gas gun

I am looking for a few powders and sujested start loads to start with , that will cycle the action properly
But I am out of 4895 or I would have started with it [smilie=b:[smilie=b: and no one seems to be getting surpluss back in

I plan on turning the gas system off and hand cycle the action while working up loads so I don't have to chase the brass

Thanks

John

John,

I am also starting to create some loads for my FAL. I have used 3031 in the past with some very hard boolits and have had good function. I will also be starting to experiment with water quenching in this project. My goal here is to create functioning loads with accuracy that is good enough to shoot an Appleseed shoot qualification. I will use my 16.0gr 2400 for slow fire stages and the functional loads for rapid fire strings. This 16.0gr load will print under 2" at 100yds in my bolt gun. If I remember right, my functioning load for 3031 was 34.0grs which gave me a little over 2000fps in my 22" bolt gun. The boolit I use is the lyman 311466 150gr slug sized .308. I just received a .309 dia size die and will be experiementing with that as well.

Best of luck,

Jim

Dan of Hi-Tech told me that he expects to get some Russian equivalent 4895 sometime. Hope so myself.

Tell me more! Was an approximate price mentioned?

You know as much as I do. No price or expected delivery date given. Go to Hi-Techs site and call him.

Right at the top of the topic listing for this forum is my 'stickied' thread about loading the 7.62 NATO in the M1A rifle.

Pretty near any load that works in an M1A should work in the FAL as well, due to similar locations of gasports etc. Might take some minor tuning of the load, but the adjustable regulator on the FAL will help in this department.

I'm not interested in any load that won't function the rifle correctly, so there are no such loads in that long thread.

I use the bottom loads on the chart for my M1 Garand with IMR4895, never have any problem with a full case and compressed WC872/WC860. The IMR 4895 W/ 39.4g is 2050fps with a 185g GC hard boolit at .310 both loads operate the M1 with no problems.

Thanks
Now I have great selection of loads to try

35.0 3031 works the action with authority. 30. 0 3031 functions after closing up the gas port a notch or two. I will be trying the 30.0 load of 4064 next time out. All these loads use the 311366 150gr boolit loaded to 2.640. They engrave the rifling for a groove or two but I have not had any stick when extracting a live round. The barrel on this particular rifle is 18.5".

John, keep us updated on your progress.

John, I know you siad you don't want to chase brass, but if you were inclined to set that rifle for repeater functioning, you might experiment with that adjustable gas port of yours. You might, if you're lucky, get that rifle of yours to work with your 2400 load with the gas port opened all the way up. I'd be interested to see if this works or not. I'm getting ready to start my odyssey with my new M1A Loaded with heavy cast (200 grain +), and I'd be ecstatic if the 2400 load operated that rifle (assuming it shot good, of course).

If he wants to try 2400, he should close the gas port all the way. On an FN, the port is a fixed size, the adjustment is actually a vent to dump off excess gas. I doubt 2400 will be able to make enough gas. Maybe RELODER 7.

I learn something new every day. I was informed that it regulated the amount of gas that the system would utilize. The amount of knowledge here on this board astounds me.

Thanks richbug!

I've got a very accurate J word load using a 150gr. bullet and ajusted the gas plug to have the brass barley bounce off of my shooting bench.
