Sounds like the detent plug and spring may be missing.

Take the pistol grip off and check for them. They engage the selector lever vertically from under the grip.

Hi,
Well..The AR-15 is Americas favorite defense rifle for a few reasons. One of them is that it is a simple rifle to work on or put together yourself! Parts are abundant and for the quality of rifle that it is, actually cheap!

Let us know what you found,I'm sure you can figure it out! Sharfschuetzer, nailed it I'm sure!

yep, you need the safety spring and detent.

Sounds like someone took the handgrip off and did not realize it held in the two parts that everyone is talking about.

Shipping is going to cost more than the parts.

TC Louis has it nailed! Assume "the Armorers' position" (hands and knees) and go find that spring and goofy looking pointy detent pin that falls out if you take the grip off without 'due care'. I put a gob of grease on that spring more to keep it from dropping out than as needed lube.

Yes sir you are most defiantly missing safety spring and detent.
