Does anyone know when they started listing what edition the cast bullet hand book is?
I have one that doesn't say anything about an edition, so I assume it is probably before the 1st edition, if that makes sense.

It also does not have a copyright date or publishing date, but I assume it was 1970 or later, as it has an add on the back page for the 45th edition reloading handbook.

I think yours is the 1st Edition. I've ordered one from Cornell Publishing as a reprint. It just says Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook. The others say 2, 3, 4. I have 3 & 4. Cornell also has a lot of the old Ideal handbooks, going back to the start, if you are interested. I'm trying to get one for about every 5 years, just to try and chart the change in different rounds. It's a right interesting study. mikey

I dug this out yesterday evening, because I picked up an 8 pound jug of red dot yesterday, and remembered it had some red dot data in it. I never would have thought it, but it has data for red dot for probably 90% or more of the listed rounds and every bullet weight that is listed. Even the big magnum rifles, 300,338,375 etc.

What is on the front and rear covers? If no covers what are the first 5 rifle calibers listed?

It has a rifle (bolt) an open box of shells missing 5 and the 5 empty brass laying on the target with a pair of glasses. On the back cover there is an add with a picture of the 45th lyman price 4.95 and a picture of the shotshell handbook price 3 bucks. lol

The first 5 listings is 22 hornet, 218 bee, 222 rem,223 rem and 222 rem mag. red dot loads for every weight bullet on all of them. lol

Yep, that's the same as my 1st edition. Inside the front cover at the bottom should be a circle C copyright mark & 1973, if yours is same as mine & it should be spiral bound with a plastic binder. I have 1, 3 & 4 editions.

Inside the cover is a picture of I'm assuming William Lyman and the ideal shooters handbook, but no no circle, copyright info or date.

It sounds like I have the 1st edition also. It has the 1973 copyright date. It sits at my desk so I can look up boolit molds. Still in pretty good shape except a few of the pages have come loose from the spine.

I believe you are describing the 2nd edition. The first was copyright 1954 and has an orange cover. I happened to notice my 1973 2nd edition did not say 2nd on the cover just last night before reading this.

I just bought a reprint of the 1958 cast bullet handbook, my dad bought my original back in 1963 and its falling apart, I tried for years to buy a better copy on Ebay, but never could afford the prices collectors wanted. I use my handbook all the time I need a new mold or load info, when you shoot old rifles and pistols you need one. My latest pistol is a Webley-Pryse revolver in .476/.455. I just bought a Lyman mold 457195 for it, got the info guess where? My old ideal cast bullet handbook. Found the mold on ebay, they do not make it any more as far as I know.

fred2892 has it right! I was able to find the first edition at our local annual gun show a couple of weeks ago. I have been looking for it for a couple of years.

I looked at four 1958 first editions before I found one which had the large poster still attached as the last page in the handbook.

The images of the reloading and casting sets on the reverse side have always fascinated me.

Now why in 1958 was Lyman advertising Saeco products?

Post # 12 is exactly what I have, why it has no copy right date info in it is beyond me, as the book is in great shape.

This is the inside front cover of my 1973 second edition. Is it possible your book is a copy with the copyright date removed. Do Cornell publications remove the copyright date when they print copies?

It is possible mine is a copy, if so it would be a very old copy. Does yours have the post cards on the last page to order lyman catalogs and books. Is it possible to see a copy of the inside of your back cover?

Here's a few more Lyman/ideal handbooks. There's a #35 around here somewhere too.

The centennial journal 1878-1978 is a very good read and was still available new from Lyman a coup!e of years ago.

Okay, I am going to say mine is probably a reprint. Everything from the fill out and mail card #2 up is identical, but totally different below it. Thanks.
