Any thoughts on a cast load for a Garand rebarrelled in 308? I have lyman 308466, Rcbs 180 gr, and lee 200 gr rd nose. Anybody out there done this and what were your results?

Try the Lee 200 gr bullet over 27 gr H4895 with a 1 gr dacron filler. I think you will be pleased.

Thanks guys, and here's an article on these particular rifles for those interested:

Mr Gibson,
I appreciate the knowledge you share with this group.
Since this post is a few years old, would you still recommend this load.
I checked the Lyman CBH and it's below their recommended starting load.
Thank you for your time.

Yes, I still recommend that as a starting load. Start there and work up in 1/2 gr increments to 30 gr with the dacron filler. As loading density increases with the increases powder charge drop the dacron filler to 3/4 gr. The better bullet would be a 311299.

Thank you for the prompt reply.
Funny you should mention the 311299. I was just going to ask if I could sub that since I don't have the Lee 200.
What OAL do you use. My Garand has the new Criterion barrel cut to the 308 WIN chamber.
Dou you crimp?

NOE 311299 and H335 is what I'm using in my M1A. Snafu12 has some posts on this in his NORINCO M14 clone. WC844 is an in-expensive equivalent...AND HI-TECH AMMO is 20 some miles away. 8 pounds for less than $100.

I've got several sets of dies, so use an M die for neck expansion; a seater die; and a RCBS taper crimp seater die to lightly crimp afterwards.

I use the little LEE hand trimmer in a cordless drill each time I reload a casing.

Sorry I don't have the OAL as I'm moving and most all my "stuff" is in temparary storage. However, in the .308W I usually seat the 311299 so the GC (top of it any way) stays in the case neck and the top lube groove is just covered. With a gas gun like the M1 if the bullet gets pushed back on chambering I will use a Lee FCD to crimp the case mouth just under the bottom edge of the front driving band.

I might add that as with most commercial moulds turned out in quanity can have small dimensional differences. I have seen some 311299/314299s that have larger driving bands and slightly longer noses. If you are restriceted to the 2.82 +/- OAL for many max mag lengths then you may have to seat deeper and perhaps roll crimp into the front driving band. When I use my 314299s in worn throat .308s I have to do that.

Thank you. That is the information I wanted to know. With those guidelines I can figure out the OAL.
