Several months ago, I made one of these and left it at the firing range for people to use.

One of my friends saw it and said that he would really like to have one that he could use in his reloading room.

I made him a 6 Rifle Rack and he picked it up today.

I used soft nylon rope to line the barrel slots. The rope is held in position with clear silicone adhesive. I used 4.5 " centers for the barrel slots. No chance of a bolt hitting the rifle next to it scratching the stock.

Cheap and effective, what's not to love?!?

10' of that rope was $6.40 ( Ouch ! ! )
.64 per foot.

The rest of it is scrap.

Put together with 3 1/2" long torx head screws and wood glue.

This thing is like a Timex watch....
" It will take a licking and keep on ticking."

Ben,
.
I love the simplicity of your design! Could you put wheels and handles on it so you use the stand to get your guns from the car to the range bench?
.
Just a thought,

I'd think that an axle and a couple of lawn mower wheels would work marvels with your idea.

Thanks for the idea. Made mine and it came out to be a 10 gun rack. Needed it for a few projects I'm working on cleaning up in the shop before I list them. Helps a ton. Going to put the carpet and rope on later tonight.

These work well too but are as spendy as the rope unless you deduct the cost of the silicone and time/mess: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-15-lb-1-4-in-x-3-1-2-in-Screw-In-Tool-Hook-01215/202305569?N=5yc1vZc89i

A blue rubber band salvaged from store-bought broccoli heads stretches across the forks of the tool holder and secures the rifle in place.

Just some more ideas to consider.

I use those blue rubber bands from the broccoli to secure my molds.

Nevertheless, I intend to make a rack that is at least similar. I've had rifles fall to the floor when I removed them from the safe to get to something in the back. No more!

Nice, racks are great to have. I've got one that a local guy made, it holds 16 guns, 8 on each side. It's foldable and lighter 3/4" pine, so it's portable for range trips.

Scroll to the bottom here, it's the A Frame rack. He just basically copied this design. http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinRacks04.htm

Thanks Gear,

If it works and is a better buy these guys need to know about it.

Many thanks,

Oh, I wouldn't say "better", just an option if one doesn't want to fool with silicone and rope or doesn't have a band saw/coping saw/saber saw handy to make those neat cutouts you did. Just screw a 2x4 flat across the back of the uprights, flush with the top, pre-drill some holes and screw in the shovel hangers at whatever spacing is desired.

Those shovel hangers are really handy for screwing into the edge of a workbench, too, so you can lean a rifle there to clean from the muzzle, slug the bore, whatever you want. They stick out and can snag clothes, but you can just screw it back out when not in use.

Gear,

Yes, that would be a neat way to hold the barrel or fore end in a home made gun rack.

Many thanks,
Ben

I used a cheap jjigsaw to make the cuts. Didn't take too long.
I thought about using something like what hear suggested. If I didn't have a jigsaw that's what I'd do for sure. It's a great idea too.

Years ago I made a cheap portable shotgun rack and used a piece of cedar siding for the top board. I used a 2" hole saw to drill a series of holes down the center of the board. Using a table saw, I ripped the board right down the center so that the cut intersected the centerline of the holes. That gave me a series of half moon cut outs for the barrels to rest in. No jigsaw needed.

We're all coming up with some good ideas here.
I hope that some readers will apply this information in a project of their own and get some good benefit from all this.

I remodel for a living and end up with all sorts of wood and carpet scraps that I have to pay to dump. Now I know what I can do with them. Good idea.

If you set up 3 or 4 of these at a garage sale , you just might be surprised what you could sell them for.
