This is data I have accumulated over a period of time, while trying to work-up the most accurate and consistent loads that I can. I thought I would share this with you.

All brass was trimmed to 2.095" +/-.001":

Federal (10 pcs): Average weight 195.9 gr, ES 4.7 gr
Remington (10 pcs): Average weight 190.8 gr, ES 4.3 gr
Starline (25 pcs): Average weight 193.8 gr, ES 2.0 gr
Winchester (10 pcs): Average weight 166.4 gr, ES 2.7 gr

Please add any other relevant data you have for .45-70 brass, such as other brands, case neck thickness, case capacity, number of times reloaded, problems if any, etc. Loading comments or quirks with these cartridges would also be appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

I weighed 142 WW 45-70 cases from 3 different lots to see how much they varied from lot to lot.

Avg of all 142 cases = 163.8 grains Low weight = 160.2 High weight = 167.3

The 3 lots were
__ AVG _ LOW _ HIGH
90 163.1 160.2 165.1

30 165.2 164.3 166.7

22 164.7 163.5 167.3

I will add this

Most powders have a specific gravity of 1 Where water is 1. Brass has a specific gravity of about 8
One grain of powder takes up about the same space in the chamber as 8 grains of brass.
The difference from low to high with these cases is about 7 grains.

Thanks for posting that. That's just the kind of really helpful info I was hoping someone would add to these threads.
