I just ordered the 45LC Cylinder Conversion Kit for my Uberti 1858 New Army (44cal) BP Pistol. Can anyone recommend a good Cowboy load for either BullsEye or 700X? I will be using 230gr LRN cast bullets, I'm trying very hard not to sound like the Rookie that I am.

Thanks.

I'd use Trail Boss if you have access to it. Research it through Google and search by caliber. You'll find many possibilities. In my opinion, any "Cowboy Action" load in 44 or 45 will be safe in a pistol that conversion cylinders are available for. I love it in my Old Army.

In .45 Scofield brass a charge of 4.5 grains of Bullseye and the Saeco #954, 230-grain flatnosed bullet at 1.40" OAL approximates the 700 fps velocity of the M1884 service load. In .45 Colt brass at 1.60" OAL with the same bullet, 5.5 grs. of Bullseye gives 724 fps in my 5-1/2" Colt.

Gonna second the use of trailboss, fills that big case so much better. I used unique but got inconsistent results due to so small amount in a big case.

Bullseye will work just fine. Start with 4.5 gr and work up to 6.5 gr. Stop when you get what you want.

Larry speaks the truth, as usual. BE is a good and useful powder for mild 45 Colt loads, despite what others will tell you. Are there better powders? Sure, but for just plain fun and economy, BE is great.
My gun likes 5.5 gr or so but your gun may be different.
