Serial number is a bit over K 40000. The grips have a big diamond checkered in the middle, and it has a 6-inch barrel. I believe it to be post- WWII because of the K prefix. What can anybody tell me about when it was made?

I probably paid way too much. It's about 90% blue.

My SCSW is packed away in anticipation of a move, but if you got a nice K22, you didn't pay too much....you just may have bought too soon! Enjoy it!

According to the book, the serial number you provided was in the range for the guns introduced in 1948. If you want the exact date you have to contact Mr. Roy Jinks at S&W and he will research the gun for a fee and send you a letter with the information. That is the only way to get the exact date and year. Nice find on the gun, I love S&W revolvers. CJ.

NuJudge--

Diamond grip (if original) means pre-1968. Lack of model number stamping in crane indicates pre-1957. That's the best I can do based on the info, and I don't have a source for S/N-year conversion. In any event, you found yourself a treasure, one worth the research fee to S&W for confirmation info.

I have K6999X here, one of my favorites. The SCSW said it was a 1947 IIRC.

I bought it a year ago or so 90% give or take, I paid $325

Very few pre war guns were made, lots made in the 1946-1950 era. I'd wager it is a late 46 or early 47. These were high tech bullseye guns in their day.
