My niece is participating in CMP sanctioned Rimfire Sporter matches through 4H. I'm trying to narrow down scope choices. The maximum in the class is 6x, but it can be a variable that is set and taped at 6x. Personally, I prefer fixed power scopes, but 6x is a pretty narrow selection.

The targets are shot at 50 and 25 yards, so it seems reasonable to get a scope with a parallax adjustment.

My niece wants finger adjustable turrets and would prefer a fine crosshair with a dot, she thinks.

I've come up with these options so far:

Any input on these or other suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I think a fixed 6 power scope will have less use in the future then a variable power scope. A air gun scope that has parallax adjustment goes down to at least 10 yards and can be bought with target knobs.

Doc, good point. I like fixed power scopes, but I don't know that she will.

Is there any way you can find a scope with the fine crosshairs and dot for her to try? The reason I ask is I bought a Leupold M8 4X with that reticle once and didn't like it. The small dot was pretty hard to pick up; it might have been fine for only shooting paper targets, but I like to plink at targets of opportunity.

If the dot is big enough to see easily and sized to the bullseye, I can see how it would be a good combination, kind of like double aperture sights.

Guardian,
From personal experience, I have that Leupold with the ultra-fine crosshair and a dot. It is a fantastic scope, however, if there are any plans for field use you may find that Mk42's comment is very true. I set mine up on a nice .22 Sako, but have decided to change it out to a more field friendly reticle. On targets with a color contrast that will not hide the dot, you will be hard pressed to find better, but against a large black bullseye or the irregular patches of color found in the field, it just turns invisible. If this will be used exclusively under ideal conditions, go for it. My two cents worth.

P.S. If you decide you want the Leupold, send me a PM since mine is on the short list.

Part of the Leupold's attraction was their warranty and ability to change reticles. I just discovered they won't change reticles on the 6x42 comp scope.

I agree the target dot can be difficult to use in the field. She'll likely be competing in the 4H matches for 3 more years. Their targets look like this:

104197

The white center would make the dot usable, I think. She's used another competitor's target dot scope and liked it, when shooting this particular target. We also regularly attend Project Appleseed events, for which the dot may be useless. She has not tried a target dot on one of those targets.

Crank, PM coming.
